Service Mower


Removing Mower Deck Belt

1. Remove mower from machine.

NOTE: Do not remove step on 62C deck.

2. Remove each belt guard cover by loosening six hex nuts (A). On 62C mower deck, left belt guard has only one hex nut to remove. Do not remove step (B).

3. Clean top of mower deck and area around all of the sheaves (C) of debris.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Do not clean belts using parts cleaning solvent or belt dressing. They soften belts and shorten belt life.


4. Clean and inspect belt for damage:

• If belt does not need to be replaced, stop here. Install belt shields.

• If belt does need to be replaced, continue with next step.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Components are installed under spring tension. Wear eye protection and use proper tools when installing and removing components with spring tension.

5. Remove idler tension spring (D) to relieve tension on the belt.

6. Remove clip (E) and washer (F). Lift idler arm up to remove belt.

7. Loosen two nuts (G) on rear of gearbox.

8. Remove two front nuts and carriage bolts (H).

9. Tilt gearbox (I) forward and remove deck drive belt.

10. Remove belt from all spindle sheaves. Discard belt.

Installing Mower Deck Belt

1. Install mower deck belt as shown above.

2. Install belt on gearbox sheave (A).

3. Lower gearbox and install two carriage bolts and nuts (B). Tighten to 73 N•m (54 lb-ft).

4. Tighten two nuts (C) to 73 N•m (54 lb-ft).

5. Continue routing belt around all sheaves (D).

6. Route belt on idler sheave (E).

7. Push idler arm down and install washer (F) and clip (G) on idler post. Make sure clip is fits tightly in groove on idler post.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Components are installed under spring tension. Wear eye protection and use proper tools when installing and removing components with spring tension.

8. Pull idler arm and install idler tension spring (H) on idler arm spring bracket (I).

9. Install both belt guards (J).

10. Install six hex nuts (K) and tighten. On 62C deck, left belt guard has only one hex nut.

Checking for Bent Mower Blades

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Blades are sharp. Always wear gloves when handling blades or working near blades.

Replace blades if defective. Never straighten or weld them.

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

2. Raise mower deck to highest position to access blades.

3. Measure distance (A) between blade tip and flat ground surface.

4. Rotate blade 180° and measure distance between other blade tip and flat ground surface.

5. Install new blade if the difference between the two measurements is more than 3 mm (1/8 in.).

6. Repeat for all blades.

Sharpening Blades

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Blades are sharp. Always wear gloves when handling blades or working near blades.

Always wear safety eye protection when grinding.

• Sharpen blades with grinder, hand file, or electric blade sharpener.

• Keep original bevel (A) when grinding.

• Blade should have 0.40 mm (1/64 in.) cutting edge (B) or less.

• Balance blades before installing.

Balancing Blades

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Blades are sharp. Always wear gloves when handling blades or working near blades.

1. Clean blade.

2. Put blade on nail in a vise. Turn blade to horizontal position.

3. Check balance. If blade is not balanced, heavy end of blade will drop.

4. Grind bevel of heavy end. Do not change blade bevel.

Removing And Installing Mower Blades

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Rotating blades are dangerous. Before adjusting or servicing mower:

• Disconnect spark plug wire(s) or battery negative (-) cable to prevent engine from starting accidently.

• Always wear gloves when handling mower blades or working near blades.

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety section.)

2. Remove mower from machine.

3. Turn mower over and place a block of wood between blade and mower deck to prevent blade from turning when removing bolt.

4. Remove bolt with washer (A), and blade.

5. Inspect blades; sharpen, balance or replace blades as necessary.

6. Tighten bolt to 68 N•m (50 lb-ft).

Installing Mower Blades

1. Check that deflector cup (B) is properly seated between mower spindle and blade.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Improperly installed blades can loosen during operation. Do not lubricate or use power tools when installing the blade bolt or the bolt will be ineffective.

Use a hand torque wrench and tighten bolts to factory specified blade bolt torque.


2. Install and hand-tighten bolt with washer (A) until mower blade is in full contact with spindle.

3. Hold mower blade with glove to prevent rotating and tighten bolt to 68 N•m (50 lb-ft).
