
Service Lubrication
Check Reservoir Oil Level
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Dirt and debris in oil can cause damage. Clean area around opening before removing reservoir cap.
Check oil level when oil is warm.
Do not overfill reservoir.

1. Operate tiller for approximately five minutes to warm the oil.
2. Stop tractor and lower tiller until reservoir cover is level.
3. Make sure reservoir cap and surrounding area are clean before removing cap.

4. Remove dipstick (A). Wipe off with a clean cloth.
5. Install dipstick. Tighten cap.

6. Remove cap. Check oil level. Oil level should be between ADD (B) and FULL (C) marks on dipstick.
NOTE: To raise oil level from ADD to FULL add 1 L (1 qt) of oil. Do not overfill.
7. If oil level is low, add John Deere HY-GARD™ J20C. Do not overfill. Other oils may be used if they meet API Service Classification SE, SF, or SG.
8. Check oil level.
9. Install and tighten reservoir cap.
Change Reservoir Oil and Filter
1. If tiller is installed for forward rotation, remove tiller from tractor. If tiller is installed for reverse rotation, leave tiller on tractor.
2. Block the tiller. Tip the tiller back.
3. Put large pan under reservoir drain:
• Reservoir holds 20.8 L (5-1/2 gal).

4. Remove drain plug (A) and drain oil.
5. Remove oil filter (B).
6. Apply a film of clean oil on seal of new filter.
7. Install filter: Turn filter clockwise until seal contacts mounting surface.
8. Tighten filter by hand one-half turn more.
9. Install and tighten drain plug.
10. Fill reservoir with 20.8 L (5-1/2 gal) of John Deere HY-GARD™ J20C oil. Other oils may be used if they meet API Service Classification SE, SF, or SG.
11. Install tiller if removed.
12. Start tractor, move throttle lever to 1/3 position and start tiller.
13. Move throttle lever to fast position. Run tiller at least on minute to fill the system.
14. Stop tiller and tractor.
15. Check reservoir oil level, add oil if necessary.
