Avoid Fumes
Engine Oil
Use oil viscosity based on the expected air temperature range during the period between oil changes.
The following John Deere oils are preferred:
Other oils may be used if above John Deere oils are not available, provided they meet the following specification:
• API Service Classification SG or higher
Changing Engine Oil and Filter
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Change the oil more often if the vehicle is used in extreme conditions: |
1. Run engine a few minutes to warm oil.
2. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY Section.)
4. Remove oil drain hose (A) from inside frame on front of machine to allow draining into pan.
5. Put drain pan under oil drain hose.
6. Loosen drain plug bolt (B) and allow oil to drain completely.
7. Return oil drain hose to inside of frame.
9. Clean dirt from around oil filter (C).
10. Put drain pan under filter drip tray hose (D).
11. Turn oil filter counterclockwise with a filter wrench to remove.
12. Put a light coat of clean engine oil on gasket of new filter.
13. Install replacement oil filter by turning oil filter clockwise until gasket contacts filter base. Tighten filter an additional one-half turn.
14. Remove oil filler cap (E) on right side of machine. Add approximately 1.8L (1.9 qt) of oil.
15. Install and tighten filler cap.
16. Start and run engine at idle to check for leaks.
17. Stop engine. Fix any leaks before operating.
18. Check engine oil level. Add oil if necessary.
Cleaning Air Intake Screens
c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Compressed air can cause debris to fly a long distance.
• Clear work area of bystanders. • Wear eye protection when using compressed air for cleaning purposes. |
1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY Section.)
4. Clean air intake screens on side panels using a brush, cloth or water.
5. Clean rear air intake screen (B) with a brush, cloth or compressed air. Blow compressed air back toward seat.
Servicing Air Cleaner Element
1. Park the machine safely. (See Park Safely in the SAFETY section.)
4. Clean any dirt and debris from air cleaner before removing cover.
5. Remove nut (A), slotted washer (B) and upper case (C).
6. Inspect foam precleaner and element without removing.
7. Inspect the foam precleaner without removing it. If the precleaner (C) is dirty:
• Remove it from the filter carefully, leaving the paper element in the air cleaner housing.
• Wash precleaner in a solution of warm water and liquid detergent.
• Rinse precleaner thoroughly. Squeeze out excess water in a dry cloth until precleaner is completely dry.
8. Inspect the paper filter element without removing it. If the element is damaged or dirty:
• Carefully remove paper filter element (E) from air cleaner housing.
• Clean air cleaner base very carefully, preventing any dirt from falling into carburetor.
• Install new paper filter element into air cleaner. Make sure element is seated properly.
• Install and tighten wing nut.
9. Install foam precleaner (C) on paper element.
NOTE: When installing slotted washer, rotate so all four holes in upper case are open.
10. Install upper case, slotted washer and nut.
Checking Spark Plug
1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY Section.)
3. Disconnect spark plug wire (A) on both sides of machine.
4. Remove spark plugs on both sides of machine.
5. Clean spark plugs carefully with a wire brush.
• Pitted or damaged electrodes.
NOTE: In Canada, replace spark plugs with resistor plugs only.
7. Replace spark plugs as necessary.
8. Check plug gap (B) with a wire feeler gauge. To change gap, move the outer electrode. Gap must be 0.75mm (0.030 in.).
9. Install and tighten spark plugs to 25N•m (18 lb-ft).
Recommended Engine Coolant
The following John Deere coolants are preferred:
• COOL-GARD® PRE-DILUTED SUMMER COOLANT (TY16036).
• COOL-GARD® CONCENTRATED SUMMER COOLANT (TY16034).
If neither of the recommended coolants is available, use a glycol base coolant that meets the following specification:
Check container label before using to be sure it has the appropriate specifications for your machine. Use coolant with conditioner or add conditioner to coolant before using.
If using concentrate, mix approximately 50 percent antifreeze with 50 percent distilled or deionized water before adding to cooling system. This mixture will provide freeze protection to -37 degrees C (-34 degrees F).
Certain geographical areas may require lower temperature protection. See the label on your antifreeze container or consult your John Deere dealer to obtain the latest information and recommendations. Never exceed the maximum dilution rate for the coolant you are using. Exceeding the maximum rate will greatly reduce the coolant effectiveness.
Service Cooling System Safely
Servicing Cooling System
Checking Coolant Level
1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY Section.)
4. Check recovery tank (A) coolant level:
• If engine is warm (into green range on coolant temperature gauge), coolant level should be between the “H” line (B) and the “L” line (C).
• If engine is cold, coolant level should be at the “L” line (C).
5. Remove recovery tank cap (D) if necessary to add coolant.
6. Add pre-diluted coolant or specified ratio of antifreeze and water.
7. Install and tighten recovery tank cap.
Draining Cooling System
1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY Section.)
4. Slowly open radiator cap (A) to the first stop to release all pressure.
6. Put drain pan under radiator petcock (B). Open petcock and drain coolant into pan.
7. Put drain pan under drain plug bolt (C) on right side of machine.
8. Remove drain plug bolt and allow remaining coolant to drain.
11. Flush or fill cooling system and install radiator cap.
Flushing Cooling System
NOTE: Cooling system capacity is 4.0L (4.2 qt).
2. Fill cooling system with clean water and John Deere Cooling System Cleaner, or John Deere Cooling System Quick Flush or an equivalent. Follow directions on can.
3. Install and tighten radiator cap.
4. Run engine until needle on coolant temperature gauge reaches the green range.
6. Drain cooling system immediately before rust and dirt settle.
• Hold tank (A) and remove screw (B).
• Pull overflow hose (C) from tank and remove tank.
8. Remove tank cap and clean tank.
10. Install overflow hose to bottom of tank. Be sure hose is not kinked.
Filling Cooling System
NOTE: John Deere COOL-GARD coolant is recommended when adding coolant to the cooling system.
Follow the directions on the container for correct mixture ratio.
1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY Section.)
3. Fill cooling system. Cooling system capacity is 4.0L (4.2 qt).
• Coolant should be level with lower ridge of radiator neck.
4. Install and tighten radiator cap.
5. Run engine until needle on coolant temperature gauge reaches the green range.
7. Check recovery tank coolant level:
• Coolant level should be between the “H” line and the “L” line.
8. Remove cap from recovery tank to add coolant if necessary.
Cleaning Radiator Screen and Fins

• Clear work area of bystanders. • Wear eye protection when using compressed air for cleaning purposes. |
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! High-pressure water or air can damage cooling fins or other engine components. Use water from a hose or reduce compressed air pressure to 210 kPa (30 psi). |
1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY Section.)
4. Remove screen (B) located behind left side panel.
5. Clean screen with a brush, compressed air or water from a hose.
6. Clean cooling fins (C) on both sides of radiator.
Checking Radiator Hoses and Clamps
1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)
3. Check radiator hoses for damage or cracking. Replace if needed.
4. Tighten hose clamps as needed.
Adjusting Carburetor
NOTE: Carburetor is calibrated by the engine manufacturer and is not adjustable.
If engine is operated at altitudes above 1829 m (6,000 ft), some carburetors may require a special high altitude main jet. See your authorized dealer.
If engine is hard to start or runs rough, check the TROUBLESHOOTING section of this manual.
Possible engine surging will occur at high throttle with transmission in “N” neutral and mower engagement lever disengaged. This is a normal condition due to the emission control system.
After performing the checks in the troubleshooting section and your engine is still not performing correctly, contact your authorized dealer.
Servicing Fan Belt

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Rotating parts can catch fingers, loose clothing, or long hair. Wait for engine and all moving parts to stop before leaving operator’s station to adjust or service machine.

Checking Belt Tension
1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)
4. Apply moderate thumb pressure to belt between driveshaft sheave and fan pulley. Belt should deflect inward approximately 13mm (1/2 in.).
5. Adjust belt tension if deflection is more or less than specified.
Adjusting Belt Tension and Replacing Belt
1. Disconnect wires from spark plugs on both sides of machine.
NOTE: Rotate driveshaft for access to bolts, if necessary.
2. Remove three bolts (A) to disconnect drive shaft (B).
3. Remove three bolts (C) to remove outer sheave (D).
4. Remove belt (E) if it is to be replaced.
NOTE: To allow sheaves to fit closer together and increase belt tension, remove shim (F). Save shim for future use.
5. Remove shim (F) if belt is to be tightened. Leave shim in if installing a new belt.
6. Loosely install belt between sheave halves and start installing the three outer sheave-retaining bolts.
7. Rotate sheave assembly as bolts are tightened to allow belt to center in sheave halves and not be pinched in an off-center position.
Replacing Fuel Filter (X700)
NOTE: Change filter when fuel is low.
1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)
4. Put drain pan under filter (A).
5. Disconnect hoses (B) from filter.
6. Connect hoses to new filter.
Replacing Fuel Filter (X720, X724, X728)
NOTE: Change filter when fuel is low.
1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)
4. Relieve fuel line pressure:
a. Loosen fuel pressure relief screw (A) on left side of machine to relieve pressure.
5. Remove push pin (B) on both sides of fuel filter on right side of machine.
6. Put drain pan under filter.
7. Press down on release mechanisms to disconnect fuel line couplers from filter.
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Incorrect installation of fuel filter may cause engine damage. Install the filter with the arrow pointing in the direction of fuel flow for proper operation. |
8. Connect fuel line couplers to new filter making sure filter arrow (C) is pointed in the direction of fuel flow.
Adjusting Fuel Injection Pump
NOTE: The fuel injection pump is calibrated by the engine manufacturer and should not require any adjustments.
If engine is hard to start, lacks power, or runs rough, check the TROUBLESHOOTING section of this manual.
After performing the checks in the troubleshooting section, if your engine is still not performing correctly, contact your John Deere dealer.
