Parts
We recommend John Deere quality parts and lubricants, available at your John Deere dealer.
Part numbers may change, use part numbers listed below when you order. If a number changes, your dealer will have the latest number.
When you order parts, your John Deere dealer needs your machine serial number and engine serial number. These are the numbers that you recorded in the Product Identification section of this manual.
Greasing Gearhead
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Do not over grease. Too much grease may damage the seals and cause unit to leak and lose grease prematurely.
|
NOTE: Use a high quality multipurpose, lithium based, EP grease, NLGI grade 2. Do not use moly or graphite based grease.
MX17578
1. Remove screw (A) on right side of gearhead.
2. Hold nose of grease gun tightly over hold. Turn gear shaft while pumping grease into head.
3. Wipe excess grease from gearhead and reinstall screw.
Replacing Spark Plug
Use a NGK BMR6A spark plug with a 0.7 mm (.03 in.) electrode gap for this engine. Use an exact replacement and replace every six months or more frequently, if necessary.
Replacing Fuel Filter
Check fuel filter periodically. Replace fuel filter if it is contaminated or damaged.
Replacing Fuel Cap
c CAUTION: Avoid injury! A leaking fuel cap is a fire hazard and must be replaced immediately.
|
The fuel cap contains a check valve. Clogged air passages will cause poor engine performance. If performance improves when the fuel cap is loosened, check valve may be faulty or air passages are clogged. Replace fuel cap if required.
Cleaning Air Filter
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Keep air filter clean for proper performance and long life.
|
MX16801
1. Remove air filter cover screw (A) and cover (B).
2. Remove air filter (C). Check every day.
3. Shake the filter and clean with a soft brush.
4. If air filter is heavily contaminated, clean with soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly prior to reinstalling.
5. Install air filter, cover and screw.
6. Tighten air filter cover screw securely.
Adjusting Idle Speed
Your engine has been adjusted at the factory for optimum performance and fuel consumption. No further adjustment should be required. However, because of varying atmospheric and climatic conditions, some minor adjustment may be needed for your area.
Adjusting idle speed should always be done with a tachometer to insure proper idle speed (2800 to 3300 rpm). If a tachometer is not available, the idle speed may be adjusted by following this procedure.
c CAUTION: Avoid injury! The blades should never move at idle. Turn the idle speed screw (B) counterclockwise to reduce the idle RPM and stop the blades, or contact a John Deere Servicing Dealer for adjustment. Discontinue use until the repair is made.
|
NOTE: Check the air filter (A) before making any carburetor adjustments. Condition of the air filter is important to the operation and life of the engine and has a major affect on carburetor adjustments.
MX16802
1. Turn idle speed screw (B) clockwise until blade begins to move.
2. Turn idle speed screw counterclockwise until the blade stops.
3. Turn idle speed screw approximately 1/4 to 3/4 turn further counterclockwise.
4. If the engine does not idle properly after this adjustment, contact your John Deere dealer for service.
