
Installing
Install Proper Ballast
c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Machine can become unstable when operating with attachment. Ballast is required when the attachment is installed.
When the attachment is removed, also remove any ballast that was added to the machine.
Use only attachments and accessories recommended by the manufacturer.

When attaching mower decks to the 1400 front mower, add the following number of John Deere 19 kg (42 lb) suitcase weights to the rear weight bracket kit to improve the handling and stability of the front mower.
• 60-inch Side Discharge Mower Deck - No Weights
• 72-inch Side Discharge Mower Deck - One Weight
• 62-inch Rear Discharge Mower Deck - No Weights

1. Remove spring pin (A).
2. Pull rod (B) out of weight bracket.
3. Add John Deere 19 Kg (42 lb) suitcase weights to the weight bracket, as specified.
4. Install rod (B) and secure with spring pin (A).
Check Tire Pressure
Check tire pressure of all machine and mower deck tires before transporting or mowing with machine.
• Mower Deck Caster Tires: 152 kPa (22 psi)
• Machine Front Tires: 140 kPa (20 psi)
• Machine Rear Tires: 140 kPa (20 psi)
Installing Mower Deck
c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Drive the machine slowly and avoid quick stops when the attachment is removed. Do not operate machine at higher speeds without attachment installed.

1. Drive machine up to mower deck, lining up center of machine with mower deck drive shaft.
2. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety section.)

3. Remove retainer ring (A) from hanger pin (B) on both sides of deck.
4. Pull hanger pins out of adjustment plates (C).

5. Remove spring pin (D) and drilled pin (E) from front of lift arm (F), and remove lift arm from mower deck.

6. Remove hitch pin (G) and drilled pin (H) from each lift arm.
7. Insert the mower deck lift arms into the machine lift arm sockets.
8. Align the holes in lift arms with holes in lift arm sockets, and install drilled pins on left and right sides of machine. Install hitch pins into drilled pins.

9. Position the mower deck so the front attachment brackets (I) are aligned with the ends of the lift arms.
10. Push attachment lift lever forward into float position.
11. Push down on lift arms until ends drop down into front attachment brackets.
12. Install drilled pins through bracket and lift arm, and secure with spring pins.

13. Start machine and raise mower deck to top of travel. Stop engine. Mower deck should rotate as shown above.

14. Lock service latches (P) on left and right side mower deck lift arms.

15. 60 and 72-inch Deck Only: Remove spring pin (Q) and drilled pin (R) from anti-scalp wheel (S). Raise the anti-scalp wheel to its highest position, and install drilled pin and spring pin.

16. Lift mower deck drive shaft (T) up and over the top of the machine’s front axle (U). Extend the drive shaft to allow it to sit on top of the axle.

17. Raise the rear of the mower deck and install the hanger pin (B) into the hole in adjustment plate (C) that matches the cutting height selected for the front caster wheels. (See decal on front of mower deck.)
18. Install retainer ring (A) onto hanger pin. Repeat for the other lift arm.

19. Open the service hatch (V) on the machine, and attach the mower deck drive shaft (T) onto the machine’s PTO output shaft (W) as follows:
a. Push the mower deck drive shaft onto the PTO output shaft. (It may be necessary to turn the mower deck drive shaft to align the spines of the two shafts.)
b. Once the splines align and the drive shafts begin to couple together, pull the coupler ring (X) forward and continue to push the mower deck drive shaft rearward onto the PTO output shaft until the coupler locks in place.
c. Release the coupler ring.
d. Push and pull the coupler until you are sure it is locked on the shaft.
20. Close and latch the service hatch.
21. Set the mower deck cutting height.
22. Adjust the anti-scalp wheel so height of wheel is 6 mm (the ground when on a level surface.
23. Unlock the service latches.
24. Lower the mower deck to the ground.
