A - Orifice

B - Tip

Tables are calculated based upon spraying water. When using 28% nitrogen mixture, use GPM x 1.13 as corrective factor. When using 32% nitrogen mixture, use GPM x 1.15 as corrective factor.

See CALCULATIONS FOR OUTER COULTERS to determine orifice and tip sizes for outside rows.

NOTE: Knives work best at pressures between 25-35 psi. Setting pressure higher can result in splatter.

Injectors work best at pressures between 20-30 psi. Setting pressure above 35 psi is not recommended.

To calculate orifice (A) and tip (B) sizing, the following parameters must be known:

  • Average Desired Speed of Application (MPH)
  • Width of Row Spacing in Inches (W)
  • Desired Application Rate in Gallons Per Acre (GPA)
  • System Pressure (psi)

To convert GPA to Gallons Per Minute (GPM), use the following equation:

GPM = (GPA x MPH x W)/5940

or, alternatively:

GPM = [(gal/1000 sq ft) x MPH x W]/136

This number represents desired GPM per nozzle.

Use charts to choose correct component sizes:

Depending on machine type, outer coulters will apply either 50% or 150% of solution compared to inner coulters. Use charts to determine correct multiplication factor for machine size.

Using GPM number from INNER COULTER charts, multiply by a factor of 0.5 or 1.5 to determine correct sizing for outer.

0.5 = 50% Inner Coulter Application Rate (GPM)

1.5 = 150% Inner Coulter Application Rate (GPM)

To determine desired applications rates for outer coulters, use the following equation:

GPM Per Nozzle x 0.5

or

GPM Per Nozzle x 1.5

Example:

Inner Coulter GPM = 1.08 with size 20 tip, then 50% Outer Coulter GPM = 1.08 x 0.5 = 0.54 GPM. A size 10 tip would be used to achieve 50% application rate.

or

Inner Coulter GPM = 1.08 with size 20 tip, then 150% Outer Coulter GPM = 1.08 x 1.5 = 1.62 GPM. A size 30 tip would be used to achieve 150% application rate.

Match GPM values to ones shown in KNIFE ORIFICE or INJECTOR TIP SIZE charts to choose correct size components for desired application rates at outer coulters.
