Row Units

SymptomProblemSolution

The closing wheels are plugging with crop residue.

The closing wheels have insufficient clearance for residue flow.

Stagger the closing wheels. See Stagger Closing Wheels in the Operating Machine section.

The closing wheels leave a severe imprint in the soil.

The closing wheels are applying too much downforce.

Decrease the closing wheel downforce.

The closing wheels are not firming the soil around the seed.

The closing wheels are applying insufficient downforce.

Increase the closing wheel downforce.

The closing wheel is running on top of the seed furrow.

The closing wheel is improperly centered.

Properly align the closing wheels until centered on the row unit. See Center Closing Wheels in the Operating Machine section.

The closing wheel casting or pivot bushings are worn.

Replace the bushings on the closing wheel casting or pivot.

Monitor does not count seeds.

Dirt or debris has collected on the seed sensor.

Clean seed sensor with cleaning brush.

The Individual Row Hydraulic Downforce (IRHD) is not performing to requirements.

Performance bars are showing red instead of black on display.

Perform the IRHD valve test. (See Valve Test in SeedStar Diagnostics section of the SeedStar 3 Operator’s Manual.)

Perform the IRHD valve flush test. (See Valve Flush Test in SeedStar Diagnostics section of the SeedStar 3 Operator’s Manual.)

Valves are not meeting performance requirements.

After three valve flush tests, the IRHD is still not performing as needed.

Take to a John Deere™ dealer for removal and cleaning of the valve cartridge assembly.

The IRHD is still not performing correctly after cleaning of the valve cartridge parts.

Have a John Deere™ dealer replace each valve cartridge assembly which is not performing to needs.

Air in the hydraulic circuit for the IRHD due to switching tractors or disconnecting hydraulic hoses.

Perform the IRHD air purge test. (See Air Purge Test in SeedStar Diagnostics section of the SeedStar 3 Operator’s Manual.)

The displayed downforce is showing erratic peak highs.

Perform the IRHD accumulator test. (See Accumulator Test in SeedStar Diagnostics section of the SeedStar 3 Operator’s Manual.)

Displayed ride quality is degrading.

Perform the IRHD accumulator test. (See Accumulator Test in SeedStar Diagnostics section of the SeedStar 3 Operator’s Manual.)

The IRHD accumulator is suspected of having a leak.

Perform the IRHD accumulator test. (See Accumulator Test in SeedStar Diagnostics section of the SeedStar 3 Operator’s Manual.)

One or more row units fail the accumulator test.

Have a John Deere™ dealer replace the accumulator within the IRHD actuator.
