A - Cotter Shear Pins
The cotter shear pins (A), which connect the drillshaft to
the fertilizer drives or sprockets, shear when an excessive load is
put on the drillshaft.
Cotter shear pins also become deformed through normal usage
after extended use. In a damaged or deformed condition, it is possible
for the cotter pin to fail without a planter malfunction.
Infrequent or improper lubrication causes binding of moving
parts for the planter. The binding causes the cotter pins to shear,
thus preventing breakage of the fertilizer parts.
If the drillshaft binds due to misalignment, loosen bolts on
the drillshaft bearings on the planter. Make certain that the shaft
turns freely, then tighten bolts.
If either of the cotter pin shears, turn the drillshaft by hand
to locate where the binding is occurring. When the drillshaft can
be turned freely by hand, replace the cotter pin.
