Avoid injury. Row cleaner blades are sharp. Safely support machine before service.

Row cleaner hubs have sealed bearings. Factory and regular lubrication is not required. To keep dust away from the bearing seal, add grease to the hub grease fittings annually or every 200 hours. Add grease slowly until a slight resistance is felt or a small amount of grease comes out between the hub and the blade. If a non-sealed replacement bearing is installed, grease the row cleaner hubs every 50 hours.

These antifriction bearings are packed with grease at the factory. Every 100 hours, inspect the bearing and adjust if necessary. Every 200 hours or before each planting season, whichever comes first, disassemble the bearing, clean, and repack. (See Coulter Maintenance in General Service and Adjustments section if maintenance is required.)

Gear Case Oil

A - Plug

Tractor Power Generator: See the grease and oil specifications at the beginning of this section.

IMPORTANT: John Deere™ HD Moly Grease is preferred.

Before installing on the tractor, apply molybdenum grease to the alternator gear.

Place the gear case in upright position as shown on a level surface, remove the plug (A), and verify that the oil is level with hole. Add John Deere™ Hy-Gard™ oil as needed.

To replace oil:

  1. Remove the plug (A) and tilt the gear case until all the oil drains from the plug hole.
  2. After drained, placed the gear case in upright position as shown on a level surface.
  3. Fill with approximately 0.5 L (17 fl oz) of John Deere™ Hy-Gard™ oil or until level with the bottom of the plug hole.
  4. Install the plug into the gear case.
