EXAMPLE 2: 12-Row Narrow

This planter is to be used on a 4455 MFWD tractor with one lift-assist cylinder on the hitch. Use this code first to determine if the tractor will lift the planter using the TRACTOR HITCH LIFT CODE chart and the codes for planters with lift-assist wheels. From the chart, the 4455 with assist cylinder has a code of 422 for a planter with lift-assist wheels. The lift code for the tractor hitch is higher than the planter code so the planter can lift the planter.
Next determine the tractor front ballast requirements by using the same planter code and the chart for TRACTOR FRONT BALLAST CODES. A 4455 MFWD tractor with 14 front weights, which is the maximum for 30 in. row spacings has a code of 337. This is short of the required 370 and fluid will be required in the front tires for proper front end stability. Fluid for a 13.6-28 tire at 5 lbs. of salt per gallon adds 46 to the code for a total of 383, which is slightly more than the needed 370. Fluid in other MFWD tires will provide adequate front ballast for this example.
