Replacing Seed Opener Blades and Seed Tube Guard

If opener blade diameter is below shown specifications or if the beveled edge is worn off, the blades should be replaced. Also replace blades if damage caused by rocks or stumps results in an irregular seed furrow.

Specification

Opener Blade -Diameter 356 mm (14 inches)

If opener blades must be replaced for any reason, be certain they are replaced with the correct amount of blade contact. To replace blades, proceed as follows:

5. To properly replace blade assembly, add or remove hardened washers (C) behind blade bearing to obtain shown specifications of blade edge contact at point (A).

Specification

Blade Edge Contact -Length 38-64 mm (1-1/2-2-1/2 in.)
Use following procedures to verify:

a. Slide a business card from the blade top, and one from the blade bottom. The distance between the two cards is "blade contact". These dimensions should measure at shown specifications.

b. If dimensions do not meet required specifications, rotate blades and re-measure.

c. If necessary use hardened washers (C) to obtain specifications.

Do not replace opener blades just because they may be slightly warped.

d. Ensure blades do not contact the shank or seed tube.

IMPORTANT: In order to maintain the blades centered on the shank, equal number washers should be used side-to-side within ±3.

Blades may touch the seed tube guard but not bind it.

NOTE: Inserting a piece of paper at point (A) will also help verify correct blade edge contact dimension.

Replace blade, bearing washer, nut and cap.

NOTE: Nut on left-hand side of opener has left-hand thread.

If seed tube guard is excessively worn, replace by removing pins (B) and guard. Install new guard and pins.

When assembled, the blades should turn with minimal resistance.
