Symptom Problem Solution

Planter will not lower.

Check tractor hitch.

Low tractor hydraulic pressure.

Tractor standby pressure must be a minimum of 15 513 kPa (155.1 bar) (2250 psi).

Check tractor lift capacity against planter code.

Use lift assist wheels on planter.

Right-hand drive shaft cotter pin sheared.

Repair cause of pin shearing and replace cotter pin.

Row units on left-hand side of planter not planting.

Left-hand drive shaft cotter pin sheared.

Repair cause of pin shearing and replace cotter pin.

All row units not planting on planter.

Bolt in countershaft sprocket to seed transmission sheared.

Repair cause of pin shearing and replace cotter pin.

Closing wheels leave severe imprint in soil.

Too much spring force.

Adjust closing wheel spring.

Closing wheels not firming soil around seed.

Insufficient spring force.

Adjust closing wheel spring.

Closing wheel running on top of seed furrow.

Improper centering.

Realign.

Closing wheels not applying equal force

Closing wheel frame not level.

Re-level.

Consistent shearing of drill shaft cotter pin.

Drill shaft not aligned properly.

Loosen bearing and align shaft.

Drive wheel chain consistently falls off.

Chain may be too long.

Remove offset link.

Chain links stiff.

Oil or replace chain.

Chain dislodged by trash.

Add chain shields.

Folding wings will not raise.

Wings locked in place.

Remove locking pin.

Hydraulic cylinder malfunction.

Check hydraulic hoses for leaks and proper connection to tractor outlets.

Low tractor hydraulic pressure.

Tractor standby pressure must be a minimum of 15,513 kPa (155.1 bar) (2250 psi).

Markers not alternating.

Marker hoses not connected to marker valve correctly.

Reassemble.

Obstruction in marker orifice.

Remove and clean orifice.

Air in marker valve.

Bleed marker hydraulic system.

Marker valve defective.

Replace valve. See your John Deere dealer.

Marker lowers and disk blade is forced into ground.

Marker cylinder is not floating in J-slot.

Lengthen marker hydraulic hose loops.

Marker floats off ground.

Air in hydraulic system.

Bleed marker lift cylinder.

Planter not down.

Make sure planter is completely down.

Leaking tractor SCV.

See your John Deere dealer.

Marker cylinder not dropping down into J-slot. (Hose loop too short.)

Pull more hose out of frame tube and clamp.

Seed appears on top of ground, and dirt packs between opener blades.

Improper seed opener blades contact.

Adjust blade contact to required dimensions.
