Adjusting Opener Down-Pressure-Tractors With Open Center Hydraulic Systems

IMPORTANT: Air drill MUST BE equipped with change valve kit if used with a tractor with an open-center hydraulic system. See your John Deere dealer for installation.

1. Refer to UNDERSTANDING ACTIVE HYDRAULIC DOWN-PRESSURE SYSTEM in this section and determine initial pressure setting.

2. Place tractor transmission in "park" and keep engine running.

3. To lower openers, hold SCV lever forward for a few seconds, then release. This pressurizes the opener down-pressure system.

NOTE: Gauge needle will not move when knob is turned.

4. Rotate knob (A) to adjust down-pressure. To decrease down-pressure, turn knob counterclockwise; to increase down pressure, turn knob clockwise. One full turn equals approximately 250 psi. Once set, lock knob in position with wheel (C).

5. Raising and lowering the openers, to recharge the down-pressure system. Hold the SCV lever forward for a few seconds to pressurize the cylinders; then check pressure gauge (B) after cycling control lever. Gauge needle should be at desired setting. If gauge needle has not moved, see OPENER DOWN PRESSURE SYSTEM-TRACTOR WITH OPEN CENTER HYDRAULICS in Troubleshooting section.

6. Make a trial pass in the field.

7. If opener pressure is not satisfactory, adjust hydraulic pressure for more down-force. If gauge wheel pressure is adequate, but depth of penetration is not, see OPENER COMPONENTS AND ADJUSTMENTS and ADJUSTING GAUGE WHEEL AND SEEDING DEPTH in Preparing Machine section.
