System Operation

IMPORTANT: John Deere recommends all high pressure delivery systems be equipped with a gauge to monitor system pressure.

The liquid fertilizer pressure gauge has a little valve (A) on the top of it that is used as a vent. Flip the valve to open if the gauge is mounted vertically. Flip it to closed if the gauge is mounted horizontally. This prevents the glycerine from leaking out of the gauge when mounted horizontal.

The liquid fertilizer pump (A) is a single piston, variable stroke pump. This pump is a ground driven, positive displacement metering device. Select the high or low rate range and set the stroke of the pump to adjust the output rate. The gallons per acre application will be accurate regardless of varying speeds of the drive mechanism.

NOTE: For low rates 94 L/hectare (10 gal/acre), 6.9 kPa (0.07 bar) (1 psi) check valves should be installed at the opener. These check valves can be used for any other applied rate.

When using the unit mounted double-disk fertilizer opener or the frame mounted single-disk fertilizer opener, a low pressure delivery system is used with a flow divider on the piston pump. The flow divider will automatically adjust for varying application rates and will evenly distribute an equal amount of liquid to each output flow port. The flow divider is self-cleaning of debris; however, should large debris enter the unit, the unit may be cleaned by simply removing the four top socket head screws, then removing the cap, seal, and spring, and finally removing the needle for cleaning with a soft cloth. Assembly is made in reverse order. The unit should be cleaned and flushed out with water after usage to avoid clogging.

When using the unit mounted single-disk injection opener, a high pressure delivery system is used with a high pressure manifold on the piston pump. The unit mounted single-disk injection opener uses a nozzle (A) to restrict the flow to each row in order to maintain a specific pressure range. The lower end of the range, 138 kPa (1.4 bar) (20 psi), must be maintained to ensure even fertilizer distribution from row to row. The upper end of the range, 483 kPa (5.0 bar) (70 psi), should NOT be exceeded to prevent damage to the system. The nozzles are used to maintain system pressure, they have no effect on the application rate.

The delivery hose is equipped with a check valve near each opener. A pressure of 69 kPa (0.7 bar) (10 psi) minimum must be present before fertilizer is delivered to the opener.

IMPORTANT: Pump crankcase should be equipped with a vent plug (A). If pump is removed from machine, remove vent plug in pump crankcase and replace with solid plug to prevent oil from leaking out.

It is normal for a SMALL amount of oil to leak from weep hole (B). The weep hole must remain open. Inspect at the beginning of each season. Over-greasing of lubrication fitting (C) can cause plugging of weep hole and/or cause grease to leak from weep hole.
