Troubleshooting

Symptom Problem Solution

Shovels do not penetrate.

Too much harrow down-pressure.

Adjust. See Operating the Machine section.

Shovels worn out.

Replace.

Machine not level.

Level machine. See Operating the Machine section.

Lift cylinders not functioning properly.

See UNDERSTANDING DEPTH CONTROL SYSTEM in Operating the Machine section.

Level center frame and wings.

Assemble cylinders and hoses correctly.

Check for cylinder leakage. See your John Deere dealer.

Caster wheels set improperly.

Adjust. See Operating the Machine section.

Hard ground or adverse operating conditions.

Install depth adjustment clips on spring-reset standards. For spring-cushion standards, adjust opener down-pressure.

Standards loosening on bar or not maintaining proper angle.

Tighten U-bolts to the proper torque and equally so the same number of threads are exposed on both ends.

Plugging.

Wrong tool equipment.

Use correct tool for particular operating conditions.

Standards mislocated.

See your John Deere dealer.

Symptom Problem Solution

Frame lift does not function properly.

Hydraulic lock-up valve closed.

Open hydraulic lock-up valve.

Cylinders not functioning properly.

See UNDERSTANDING FRAME LIFT SYSTEM in Operating the Machine section.

IMPORTANT: Be sure all air is bled from lift system.

Cylinder leakage.

Repair or replace. See your John Deere dealer.

Bypass valve stuck open.

Replace filter on section that will not raise.

Insufficient tractor hydraulic pressure.

Check tractor hydraulic pressure: Use correct size cylinders for tractor pressure.

Hydraulic hoses not connected properly.

Reconnect properly.

Wing fold does not function properly.

Inner and Outer wings try to unfold simultaneously.

Adjust sequence valve.

Inner and Outer wings try to fold simultaneously.

Reduce flow rate.

Check that proper size orifices are installed on wing fold cylinders.

Plugged air hoses or manifolds.

Air volume too low.

Increase fan speed.

Ground speed too fast.

Reduce ground speed or metering rate.

Secondary hoses routed flat or uphill.

Reroute hoses correctly.

Foreign material blocking air system.

Clean air system.

Non-compatible fertilizers.

Do not mix Urea with Ammonium Nitrate fertilizer.

High relative humidity.

Use moisture resistant fertilizer.

Symptom Problem Solution

Plugged seed boots.

Backing or turning with seeding tool in ground.

Raise seeding tool before backing or turning.

Tools worn out.

Replace tools.

Uneven seed distribution between runs.

Air volume too low.

Increase fan speed.

Blockage in air lines or manifolds.

Clean air system.

Variation in secondary hose lengths or routing.

Trim hoses to uniform lengths and reroute correctly.

Improper assembly of header ring or air system.

Reassemble correctly.

Meter tuning rings not installed, or wrong number installed.

Install correct number of tuning rings for secondary header ports. See meter cartridge/hoe drill diagrams in Preparing the Machine section for information.

Seed damage.

Air volume too high.

Reduce fan speed.

Seeds too dry.

Use fresh seeds.
