Coulter Maintenance

Anti-friction bearing has a face-type seal (D). Contact of seal against a machined surface retains grease and excludes dirt. Unless bearing is in proper adjustment, seal is ineffective. If there is any play in bearing, clamp coulter blade (C) in vise, disassemble, clean and repack with John Deere Multi-Purpose Lubricant or an equivalent SAE multipurpose-type grease. Tighten nut (B) until there is drag on bearing.

NOTE: Apply 1.3 N·m to 2.8 N·m (10 lb-in. to 25 lb-in.) of drag on bearing. This drag assures positive sealing. Replace cotter pin (A) into slotted nut to lock in position.

These anti-friction bearings are packed with grease at the factory. Every 100 hours, inspect bearing and adjust it if necessary. Every 200 hours, or before each planting season, whichever comes first, disassemble bearing, clean, and repack it as outlined above. Do not use chassis lubricant in anti-friction bearings.
