Inspect and Adjust Seed Opener Blades

causym CAUTION: Avoid injury. Disk blades are sharp. Wear protective gloves and handle disks carefully.

1. Inspect blade edge contact point (D) as follows:

a. Insert two small business cards between blade opening and gently slide together until blade contact point is reached.

b. Measure distance between business cards and compare to specification.

Specification

Blade Edge Contact -Blade Edge Contact Length 38-63.5 mm (1.5-2.5 in.)

c. If distance does not fall within specifications, proceed as follows:

2. Remove cap screw (A), pivot shaft (B), and gauge wheel from row unit.

3. Inspect scrapers (C) for excessive wear and replace as necessary.

4. Inspect blades for wear or damage.

Measure blade diameter and compare to specification. Replace blades, if diameter is below specification, if beveled edge is worn off or if significant damage is apparent. See REPLACE SEED OPENER BLADES AND SEED TUBE GUARDS in this section.

causym CAUTION: Disk blades are sharp. Wear protective gloves and handle disks carefully to avoid being injured.

IMPORTANT: Nut on left-hand blade has left-hand threads.

5. Only one blade has to be removed to adjust contact point, as long as opener blades are centered on the row unit shank. If one opener blade contacts row unit shank, move shims side to side so that blades are centered.

6. Remove hub cap, nut, flat washer (A) and hardened shims.

7. Remove blade (B).

NOTE: Do not discard shims. They are needed at time of blade replacement.

8. Relocate enough shims from one side of blade to the other to increase or decrease contact point when assembled.

Blade can be installed and removed more than once before proper contact point is achieved.

9. While blade is off, inspect seed tube guard and replace, if excessively worn. See REPLACE SEED OPENER BLADES AND SEED TUBE GUARDS in this section.

10. During final reassembly, tighten blade nut and gauge wheel arm cap screw to specification.
