Shear Protection Points-12/16 Row
IMPORTANT:
All shear protection pins should be replaced annually.
Replace the shear pin ONLY with shear pin of the same size. Do not replace with other type pins. Replacement cotter shear pins (A) are located on the inside rear of seed transmission.
NOTE:
If drill shaft binds due to misalignment, loosen bolts on drill shaft bearings on planting units. Make certain shaft turns freely, then tighten bolts.
Shear protection pins (A) may become deformed through normal usage after extended use. In this condition, it is possible for the pins to eventually fail without a machine malfunction.
The shear pins (A) will shear when excessive load is put on drillshafts. Meter handle will shear when excessive load occurs in meter.
Infrequent or improper lubrication causes "binding" of moving parts within the machine. This "binding" can cause the shear pins to shear, thus preventing breakage of machine parts. Other common causes of binding include compaction of field residue on row unit drives, jammed or misaligned seed meters.
If either the left-hand and right-hand drive shear pin shears, turn the drill shaft by hand to locate where the "binding" is occurring. When the drill shaft can be turned freely by hand, replace the cotter shear pin.
Replacement cotter pins (A) and meter handle are located on mechanical transmission or on left-hand variable rate drive motor.
