Adjust Opener Down Force-John Deere 55 to 60 Series and Four-Wheel Drive Tractors With Closed Center Hydraulic Systems

IMPORTANT: Adjust opener down force to keep gauge wheels in firm contact with soil. Avoid machine damage. DO NOT use more down force than necessary.

NOTE: Active hydraulic down force systems require tractors with closed center or pressure/flow compensated hydraulics.

1. (See PRINCIPALS OF ACTIVE HYDRAULIC OPENER DOWN FORCE SYSTEM in this section.) Decide initial pressure setting.

2. Push lever forward until is locked in forward position. Hydraulics must be set for continuous flow.

3. Loosen wheel (C), watch pressure gauge (B) and rotate knob (A) to adjust down force to desired setting. Once set, lock knob into position with wheel (C). If gauge needle does not move, (see Troubleshooting section).

4. Make a trial pass in the field.

5. If opener penetration and gauge wheel contact with soil are not satisfactory, increase down force. If gauge wheel contact with soil is adequate but opener penetration is not, adjust opener components. (See OPENER COMPONENTS AND ADJUSTMENTS and ADJUST GAUGE WHEEL AND SEEDING DEPTH in Prepare the Machine section.)
