Priming and Initial Start Up of Pump

IMPORTANT: Avoid pump damage. Install vent plug (A) in pump crankcase. If pump has been removed from machine, remove solid plug in pump crankcase and replace with vent plug.

It is normal for a SMALL amount of oil to leak from weep hole (B). The weep hole must remain open. Inspect at the beginning of each season. Too much grease at lubrication fitting (C) increases the chance of weep hole plugging or leaking grease.

Priming the fertilizer system is critical to obtain best performance. An improperly primed fertilizer system has the potential to trap large air bubbles in the distribution hoses. Trapped air interferes with fertilizer flow and increases row to row variation.

Before priming, inspect fertilizer distribution system. Ensure filter screen is clean and that there are no leaks in the pump suction line. Ensure there are no pinched, kinked, or otherwise restricted hoses. Ensure there are no extreme high or low areas in the hose routing. Ensure all 69 kPa (10 psi) check valves are free of debris and blockage.

1. Open shutoff valve at tank and strainer.

2. Set pump to maximum rate.

3. System With Unit Mounted Single Disk Fertilizer Openers And Nozzles: Disconnect one opener hose unless using Number 12 nozzles. This step may be skipped for high pressure systems if priming pump at application rate and travel speed for nozzle size being used.

Systems With Special Fitting And Orifices: Start at maximum rate and open one of the special fittings at check valve (A). Do NOT lose the diaphragm in check valve. If reassembly is required, the diaphragm must be centered into hole in end cap assembly.

4. Partially fill tank with water and check system for leaks.

5. Lower machine to planting position and drive 90-180 meters (100-200 yards) at planting speed.

6. Check all distribution hoses for large air bubbles. Air bubbles prevent even application. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all air bubbles are flushed from distribution hoses.

7. Remove strainer screen and check for foreign material. Clean if necessary.

8. Select fertilizer rate from rate chart. Set pump range and output.

9. If machine sits stationary for a long period, check distribution hoses for air bubbles and prime system as necessary.
