Replace and Adjust Double-Disk Blades on Aluminum Boots

    The blades are sharp. To avoid injury, DO NOT hold blades with bare hands. Use locking pliers to hold the blades when tightening or loosening.

    NOTE: Left-hand blade is attached with a left-hand threaded nut.

    Remove 5/8 in. nut (A).



  2. Remove spring washer (B) and disk blade.

  3. Remove slinger (C) and shims (D).

  4. Remove two 3/8 in. cap screws (F) and (G). Remove flangettes (E).

  5. Remove bearings (H) and the hub bolts (I). Check seal (K) around bearing for damage and replace if necessary. Discard bearings.

  6. Coat seed boot bearing recesses and flangette recess with Lithium base grease.

  7. Place new bearings (H) on hub bolts (I), place seals on bearings and place flangettes (E) over seals.

  8. IMPORTANT: Flangettes must be positioned differently on RH and LH openers.

    Rounded end of both flangettes must be UP when installed on RIGHT-HAND opener. Rounded end of both flangettes must be DOWN when installed on LEFT-HAND opener.

    NOTE: Right-hand openers have the right-hand bearing recesses further forward and even part numbers. Left-hand openers have left-hand bearing recesses further forward and odd part numbers.

    Install 1-7/8 in. cap screw (F) in TOP hole, through flangettes (E) and seed boot. Install 3/8 in. lock nut (M) and tighten.

  9. Install 1-1/2 in. cap screw (G) in BOTTOM hole, through flangettes (E) and seed boot. Install 3/8 in. lock nut (M) and tighten.

  10. NOTE: New disk blades may require two or three shims while worn blades may require less.

    Install shims (D) on each hub bolt (I) as required. Install slinger (C) with flange toward seed boot and install disk blades.

  11. Put spring washer (B) on hub bolt (I) with cup toward blade.

  12. NOTE: Left-hand blade is attached with a left-hand threaded nut.

    Install 5/8 in. nut (A). Tighten nut to specification.

  13. IMPORTANT: The blades must turn freely. With inside scrapers disengaged, the blades should “barely touch” at pinch point (J). With blades rotating, pinch point (J) should have a maximum gap of 3 mm (1/8 in.).
