Calculate Tow-Behind (TBH) Commodity Cart and Implement Compatibility

Calculate cart weight plus product weight and compare to implement weight to determine if they are compatible when used on flat or sloped terrain.

  • Slopes up to 18% Grade (10 degrees): Total cart weight plus product weight must not exceed 2.5 times implement weight.
  • Slopes between 18%—27% Grade (10—15 degrees): Total cart weight plus product weight must not exceed two times implement weight.
  • Slopes above 27% Grade (15 degrees): TBH carts are not compatible.

IMPORTANT: For more information, see OPERATION OR TRANSPORT ON HILLSIDES in Transport section.

  1. Locate approximate empty weight of cart in the following table.

    Cart Size and Model

    Weight Empty

Weight With Grain Front, Fertilizer Rear, and Third (If Equipped)

Weight With Fertilizer in All Tanks

This example uses a grain weight of 27 kg (60 lb.) per bushel and a fertilizer weight of 35 kg (77 lb.) per bushel.

    250 bu. Tow-Behind (3rd Tank)

    3969 kg (8750 lb.)

    12 122 kg (26 725 lb.)

    12 701 kg (28 000 lb.)

    270 bu. Tow-Behind

    4082 kg (9000 lb.)

    12 587 kg (27 750 lb.)

    13 512 kg (29 790 lb.)

    340 bu. Tow-Behind (3rd Tank)

    4423 kg (9750 lb.)

    15 372 kg (33 890 lb.)

    16 298 kg (35 930 lb.)

    350 bu. Tow-Behind

    4536 kg (10 000 lb.)

    15 604 kg (34 400 lb.)

    16 760 kg (36 950 lb.)

    430 bu. Tow-Behind (3rd Tank)

    4876 kg (10 750)

    18 738 kg (41 310 lb.)

    19 895 kg (43 860 lb.)

    550 bu. Tow-Behind

    8 981 kg

    (19 800 lb.)

    26 648 kg

    (58 750 lb.)

    28 190 kg

    (62 150 lb.)

  2. Calculate weight of product times number of bushels placed in tank. Repeat for each tank. Add combined weight of all product to empty weight of cart.

  3. NOTE: If implement is not listed on chart or is not manufactured by John Deere, refer to your implement operator's manual for weight.

Locate approximate weight of implement from table on next page.

  4. Multiply implement weight by 2 or 2.5, depending on slope of terrain. Compare the result to total cart weight to determine compatibility. Cart must weigh less than result of calculation.

Examples: 12.2 m (40 ft.) 1835 Seeding Tool (table below) and 250 bushel Commodity Cart with grain and fertilizer (table above)

    • Slopes up to 18% grade (10 degrees):

Implement Weight x 2.5 = Maximum Cart Weight

      13 105 kg (28 900 lb.) x 2.5 = 32 762 kg (72 250 lb.)

    • Slopes between 18%—27% grade (10—15 degrees):

Implement Weight x 2 = Maximum Cart Weight

      13 105 kg (28 900 lb.) x 2 = 26 210 kg (57 800 lb.)

    • 250 bushel cart example filled with grain and fertilizer weighs 12 122 kg (26 725 lb.). This is less than the maximum allowed up to 27% grade, so this combination is acceptable.

  5. When total cart and product weight exceeds calculated maximum weight, product level must be reduced to lower the cart weight into acceptable range. Take a density reading of the product in use, determine pounds-per-bushel, and reduce percent-of-fill accordingly.
