The tractor's service brake is hydraulically boosted and delivers
high braking force for relatively low pressure on the pedals. To actuate,
depress both pedals, using whatever force is required. If necessary,
the service brake can be applied separately to the left or right side
of the tractor (single-wheel braking). Depending on driving conditions,
certain special conditions affect usage.
Driving on roads
When driving on public roads and other hardened surfaces, always
keep the two pedals coupled together (left illustration). As a general
rule, do not uncouple the brake pedals unless circumstances dictate
otherwise. If only one of the two pedals is depressed accidentally,
there is a danger of the vehicle skidding.
Field operation
When operating in the field, the pedals may be uncoupled if
necessary (right illustration). This allows steering corrections to
be made by depressing one of the pedals. Braking on the left side
has the effect of steering the tractor to the left, and braking on
the right steers it to the right.
Single-wheel braking can also be employed as a steering aid
when maneuvering. However, this is permitted at very low speeds only.
After operating in the field, it is essential to couple the
brake pedals together again.
CAUTION: Remember that the pedals must never reach the stops,
even when maximum force is applied. This is also true when the engine
is not running and thus not providing any pressure boost. If when
braking the pedals ever reach the stops, contact your John Deere dealer
immediately.
IMPORTANT: The pedals must be coupled together when driving
on roads and every time a trailer is towed.
NOTE: When braking with both pedals simultaneously, front-wheel
drive engages automatically to produce an additional braking effect
on the front wheels. In this case, the front-wheel drive indicator
light lights up. On tractors with Autoclutch function:
the clutch automatically separates when the brakes are actuated and
engages when the brakes are released. However, Autoclutch is deactivated
if single-wheel braking is used while engine speed is higher than
approx. 900 rpm. This means: if single-wheel braking is used to make
a turn (for example), the clutch is not activated while engine speed
is higher than 900 rpm.
