Drain, Flush, and Refill Cooling System

causym CAUTION: Avoid personal injury. DO NOT remove expansion tank cap with hot engine. Stop engine and wait until engine has cooled.

1. Lift hood and slowly turn the expansion tank cap (A) to relieve pressure, then carefully remove cap.

2. Open the radiator and engine drain cocks (B) and (C) and drain old coolant.

3. Remove thermostat cover (D) and thermostats. Install cover without thermostats. Tighten cap screws.

IMPORTANT: Thermostats must be removed to insure a thorough flush. Cab heater

must be in the ON position during the entire flushing procedure.

4. Close drain cocks, fill system with a commercial cooling system cleaning solution . Run engine up to operating temperature. Stop engine and drain system.

IMPORTANT: Never pour cold water or coolant into hot engine. Use warm water or wait until engine has cooled.

5. Close drain cocks, fill system with clean water . Run engine up to operating temperature. Stop engine and drain system.

6. Remove thermostat cover (A) and clean sealing area. Apply sealant to new gasket and install thermostats and gasket. Tighten cap screws to 48 N·m (35 lb-ft).

IMPORTANT: Air must be expelled from cooling system when filling system.

7. Loosen plug (B) in thermostat housing to allow air to escape when filling system.

8. Close drain cocks again. Fill system with the specified coolant 1 .

9. Run engine to circulate and mix coolant.

10. Tighten plug (B) when all air has been expelled. Coolant level should be up to mark on expansion tank.

11. Add 570 mL (20 oz) of coolant conditioner.

12. Clean radiator and cooler condenser. Straighten any bent fins. (See Clean Grille Screens, Radiator, and Oil Cooler Condenser in Service/As Required Section.)
