Pre-Harvest Losses
They take place in the field before harvesting with the combine, caused by wind and weather conditions.

Cutting Platform Losses
The usual causes for cutting platform losses are:
-
Pods left on plants cut too high
-
Threshed grains from the speed of the reel
-
Pods, ears or sheaves cast to the ground by the high reel speed.
-
Fallen plants or not captured due to incorrect reel height
-
Grains cast to the ground due to high combine speed
-
Grains cast to the ground due to cutterbar action

Threshing Unit Losses
Those grains that remain in the pods, ears or sheaves and go out through the rear part of the combine. The usual causes for threshing losses are:
-
Large opening between the concave and the cylinder
-
Cylinder speed too low
-
High combine speed

Straw Walker Losses
Those grains that could not be separated from the straw and leave the combine through the straw walker.
These losses are usually caused by low cylinder speed and wide concave clearance that overloads the straw walker. Excessive quantity of material over the straw walker keeps the grain from dropping through its shoes.

Shoe Losses
Are loose grains that drop through the shoes out of the combine.
The usual causes for shoe losses are:
-
Incorrect fan speed.
-
Incorrect air direction
-
Shoes badly adjusted
-
Overloaded shoes by inadequate adjustment of the threshing unit
