Harvest a small area, about one quarter of the grain tank capacity. Stop the combine and allow it to run until all the straw has come out.
Then reverse the combine to a distance equal to its length.
Place the frame on the harvested part in front of the combine and count the loose grains and the grains that remain in the pods, on the ears or in sheaves inside the frame.
Repeat this operation in different areas three times. This way a more reliable figure for grain loss is obtained for this area of the combine.
Add up the total grains found by the three measurements and divide the result by three to obtain the average grain loss. Subtract from this result the

result of the pre-harvest grain loss. The figure found is the cutting platform loss.
EXAMPLE:
For the first measurement, 60 grains were found, 70 for the second and 80 grains for the third one. Previously, an average of 20 grains was found for the pre-harvest losses. What is the loss of grains at the cutting platform?
Solution:
Total grains found = 60 +70 + 80 = 210
Average grains = 210 : 3 = 70 grains
Cutting platform losses = 70 - 20 = 50 grains/ m
