Tires & Loads

The tires are the principal item that affects ballasting. Better traction is achieved with bigger or double tires. When a tire is run at its maximum capacity good performance or durability cannot be expected.

Heavy ballasting means the tire will have a greater contact with the ground and consequently there will more compaction.

Double tires can be used to reduce ground pressure and prevent excessive compaction. They are also used when single tire transport capacity is exceeded. However, doubling does not mean an increase in ballast is necessary.

Advantages of double tires

  • Double tires, with ballasting provide greater contact with the ground. This results in less slippage, increased speed and improved work capacity, allowing for a reduction in fuel costs.
  • Improves tractor stability.
  • Double tires lessen operator fatigue by providing a smoother motion.
  • Double tires provide greater tractor float.
  • Tractors can be converted to doubles and have their use potential increased at any stage of the year. Doubles perform better in soil preparation work where greater tractor power is needed.
  • Doubles allow tractor to be used under adverse soil and weather conditions, where single wheels cannot be used.
  • Doubles allow tractor to be moved for servicing with one tire only, reducing stoppage time.

Disadvantages of double tires

  • Some axles, bearings and drive train can be overloaded when using double tires. Always contact your dealer to advise you when installing double wheels.
  • Reducing double tire air pressure to improve comfort while in motion may affect service life of tire. Consult tractor operation manual or your dealer for inflation pressures.

  • If the drawbar load is light, there are no advantages in using doubles.
  • Double tires make tight maneuvers difficult and produce significant wear on tire grips and talons.
  • Replacing a double tire can be difficult, unless you have the appropriate equipment.
