At Season's End- Engine

If the combine harvester is to be stored for some time (during the winter months), metal parts of the engine must be protected from corrosion and the fuel system must be protected from gum-type deposits.

Protect engine, fuel system etc. as follows:

  • Thoroughly clean outside of engine with a safe solvent.

causym CAUTION: Do not use gasoline!

  • Drain, flush and refill the engine cooling system with new coolant every two years (See "Engine Coolant ").

IMPORTANT: Use only John Deere recommended coolant in the cooling system.

  • Open rotary radiator screen and carefully clean radiator fins, using compressed air or a weak water jet.
  • Drain off engine oil and replace the filter. Drain off the oil while it is still hot. Refill crankcase with oil of the specified quality and viscosity (refer to "Fuel, Lubricants, Coolant and Capacities " section).
  • Fully drain fuel tank and flush it with clean fuel.
  • Check fuel filters and clean them. Replace them, if necessary.
  • Fully fill the fuel tank to avoid condensation.
  • Clean the engine air intake and replace the primary air cleaner and safety elements.
  • Coat the battery cable terminals with petroleum jelly or grease.
  • Periodically run the engine at half throttle.
