After Each Harvesting Season

Combine

  • Store the combine in a dry, sheltered area.
  • Carefully wash and clean the interior and exterior of the combine. Dust and chaff fragments attract moisture, causing rust. To facilitate cleaning, run the combine for a few minutes with all inspection openings and doors open and the fan at maximum speed.
  • Clean with water, compressed air or industrial-strength vacuum cleaner.
  • Clean the augers and elevators and leave the elevator inspection doors open.
  • Thoroughly clean grain tank and unloading auger.
  • Clean the bottom of the feeder house and coat it with grease or oil to prevent rust.
  • Lubricate the combine according to the instructions in this section.
  • Lubricate all joints and bearings that do not have grease fittings with a fine layer of oil. Grease threads of adjusting screws.
  • Loosen all belts to avoid stress points.
  • Clean and lubricate chains with oil or grease to prevent rust.
  • Clean the cleaning shoe and grain pan with a good steel brush.
  • Lubricate cleaning shoe fin linkages with an oil can.
  • Uncouple header and prop up on wooden blocks.
  • Clean header locking pins.
  • Clean master link area at front part of feeder house.
  • Fully retract all hydraulic cylinders.
  • Inflate the tires and place the combine on jackstands to remove the weight from the tires.
  • Retouch any painted surfaces needing attention.
  • Make a note of all repair and service work needed before the start of the next season.
  • To ensure work is done quickly and safely during the off season book an appointment with your John Deere dealer for long before season start.

Engine

causym CAUTION: Do not use petroleum spirits to clean the engine.

  • Clean the outside of the engine with a good solvent.
  • Clean the outside of the radiator with a brush or a jet of water or compressed air.
  • Change the engine oil and filter.
  • Bleed the oil when the engine is hot.
  • Run the engine for a few minutes.
  • Drain the fuel tank and rinse it with clean fuel.
  • Then fill it completely.
  • Check the fuel filters and clean or replace them as needed.
  • Clean engine air intake and replace primary air cleaner and safety elements.
  • Check battery charge.
  • Coat battery cable terminals with petroleum jelly or grease.
  • Periodically run the engine at half throttle for about 30 minutes.
