Battery Access

Battery posts, terminals, and related components contain lead and lead compounds. These materials have been known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. ALWAYS wash hands after handling.

NOTE: Batteries are on left-hand side of cab platform.

  1. Remove and retain cap screws (A).

  2. Remove and retain battery cover (B).


Battery Care

    Gases given off by battery can explode. Keep sparks and flame away from batteries. Use a flashlight to check battery electrolyte levels.

    NEVER check battery charge by placing a metal object across terminals. Use a voltmeter, hydrometer, or battery tester.

    ALWAYS remove NEGATIVE (-) battery connection first, and reconnect it last.

    Keep batteries clean by performing the following:

    1. Turn battery disconnect switch to OFF position.

    2. Remove cap screws and battery compartment cover.

    3. Disconnect negative terminals (A) on both batteries.

    4. Disconnect positive terminals (B) on both batteries.

    5. Wipe batteries with a clean cloth.

    6. Clean posts (C) and terminals (D) with solution of 1-part baking soda to 3-parts water.

    7. Reconnect positive terminals FIRST and tighten.

    8. Reconnect negative terminals LAST and tighten.

    9. Apply thin coating of petroleum jelly and baking soda mixture on posts and terminals.

    10. Install battery compartment cover and cap screws.



  2. Keep batteries fully charged, especially during cold-weather operation (see Use a Booster Battery/Battery Charger in Operating the Engine section for proper procedures).


Battery Replacement

    Turn battery disconnect switch to OFF position.



  2. Remove cap screws and battery compartment cover.

  3. Disconnect negative terminals (A) on both batteries.

  4. Disconnect positive terminals (B) on both batteries.

  5. Remove and retain hardware (C) and strap (D).

  6. Install new batteries in reverse order of removal procedure.

    CAUTION: Dispose of batteries properly. Follow local laws and regulations for the safe disposal of used batteries.

If replacing one or both batteries, a new battery must meet or exceed the following specifications at -18°C (0°F).
