Adjusting Twine Spacing-Hydraulic Double Twine Wrap (BALEWATCH™ System)

Adjusting twine spacing on balers with hydraulic double twine wrap is a two part procedure that involves the following:

  • Setting distance (A) between twine arms to match desired twine spacing (A) on the bale. (Refer to decal located on left-hand side of tongue.)

    NOTE: Sweep time is the time required for twine arms to travel from extreme right-hand side of baler (twine cylinder fully extended) to the home position (twine cylinder fully retracted). The flow control valve controls the sweep time and is adjusted by turning the valve knob clockwise or counterclockwise as necessary.

  • Adjusting flow control valve to obtain appropriate sweep time (in seconds). (Refer to twine spacing decal located on right-hand side of tongue.)

To Adjust Twine Spacing:

1. Determine the desired twine spacing (A) on bale. There are four settings possible (refer to decal on left-hand side of tongue):

  • 50 mm (2 in.)
  • 100 mm (4 in.)
  • 150 mm (6 in.)
  • 200 mm (8 in.)

2. Set distance (A) between tips of twine arms to the desired setting by installing spring pin in the appropriate position.

NOTE: Distance (C) between twine arms and sweep time (D) must be synchronized or twine spacing will not be uniform.

Sweep times (D) assume tractor is at rated PTO speed. If operating at less than rated PTO speed, increase sweep time. If operating at more than rated PTO speed, reduce sweep time.

Do not vary tractor PTO speed when tying bales. Bale rotation speed must be constant for consistent twine spacing from one bale to the next.

3. Set the sweep time as follows (refer to decal on right-hand side of tongue):

a. On the twine spacing decal, locate the time (in seconds) (D) for specified baler model (A), bale height (B), and distance (C) between twine arms.

b. Rotate adjusting knob (F) two complete turns clockwise from full open position. ( This will provide a starting point for adjusting the sweep time. )

c. Move twine arm to extreme right-hand side of baler (twine cylinder fully extended) using tractor hydraulics with tractor engine at rated PTO speed.

d. With tractor engine at rated PTO speed, move twine arms to home position while holding tractor SCV lever. Observe time for the arms to move from extreme right side of baler to home position.

  • If sweep time is too short, turn flow valve knob clockwise.
  • If sweep time is too long, turn flow valve knob counterclockwise

e. When desired sweep time has been obtained, turn knob locking ring (E) clockwise and tighten.

For example: (Refer to decal) If making 1219 mm (48 in.) bales (B) using a 457 or 457S baler (A) with twine arm spacing (C) set at 100 mm (4 in.), adjust valve knob (F) until sweep time (D) equals 10 seconds (15 seconds for 557).

  • If spacing between any two wraps on a bale is less than 100 mm (4 in.) apart, decrease sweep time by turning knob counterclockwise.
  • If spacing between any two wraps on a bale is more than 100 mm (4 in.) apart, increase sweep time by turning knob clockwise.
