Adjusting Twine Cutter Tension (Hydraulic)

NOTE: 457 and 457S; Adjust twine distance from right sidesheet before performing this adjustment.

1. 457 and 457S; Adjust twine distance from right sidesheet. (See ADJUSTING TWINE ARM DISTANCE FROM RIGHT SIDESHEET-HYDRAULIC [BALEWATCH SYSTEM] in this section.)

causym CAUTION: Twine arms can move unexpectedly when twine arm power is on. Stay out of the path of twine arms at all times when twine arm power is on. During service or adjustment procedures for twine arms or twine cutter mechanism, turn off power to twine arms BEFORE placing your hands in the path of twine arm travel.

If there is crop material which is holding twine arms from moving freely during twine arm cycle, it is recommended that twine arms be manually positioned to release any "hold" they may have on the crop material. Turn off power to twine arms. This will help to make the unplugging operation easier and prevent twine arms from moving unexpectedly while your hands may be in the path of the twine arms. Stay out of the path of twine arms at all times when power to twine arms is ON.

6. Using tractor hydraulics, move twine arms until front edge of strap (C) lightly contacts tab (B).

7. Stop tractor engine and remove key.

8. Adjust tab (B) so that clearance (E) between bottom edge of tab (B) and bottom side of strap (C) is within specifications. Tighten nut (A) while holding tab (B) vertical.

Specification

Bottom Edge of Tab-to-Bottom Side of Strap -Clearance 2-4 mm (3/32-5/32 in.)

NOTE: Light contact between tab (B) and front twine arm (D) is acceptable.

9. Start tractor engine.

10. Using tractor hydraulics, move twine arm completely forward. Front twine arm must pass under tab (B). Adjust tab if necessary.

11. Using tractor hydraulics, move twine arm behind twine cutter.

12. Stop tractor engine and remove key.

causym CAUTION: Be careful when working around the knife. It is sharp.

13. Gently pull cutter link (A) forward until knife (C) contacts hex anvil. Remove slack, but DO NOT deform cutter link.

15. Make sure twine arm stop (A) is in the down position.

16. Start tractor engine.

17. Using tractor hydraulics, operate twine arms through one complete cycle. Return twine arms to "home" position. Cylinder must be retracted with hex block (F) contacting cylinder end cap.

18. Stop tractor engine and remove key.

19. Check distance (C) between mark (E) on cutter link and front side of cutter link support. Distance should be within specifications.

Specification

Mark on Cutter Link-to-Front Side of Cutter Link Support -Distance 5-7 mm (3/16-9/32 in.)

  • To increase distance (C), move washers (B) from front of tab (D) to rear of tab.
  • To decrease distance (C), move washers (B) from rear of tab (D) to front of tab.

20. If moving the washers cannot bring distance (C) within specification, put two washers (B) in front of tab (D) and four washers behind tab, then perform the following:

a. Loosen jam nut (G).

  • To increase distance (C), turn hex block (F) away from cylinder barrel until distance (C) is within specification.
  • To decrease distance (C), turn hex block (F) toward cylinder barrel until distance (C) is within specification.

b. Tighten jam nut.

21. Start tractor engine.

22. Operate twine arm through one complete cycle returning twine arm to "home" position.

23. Stop tractor engine and remove key.
