Adjusting Knife Arm

1. Remove round-head bolt from knotter bracket and rotate knotter assembly to vertical position.

2. Wiper plate (A) must be centered with heel of billhook. Loosen cap screws (C) and move arm until distance (B) from billhook tongue groove is within specification. Tighten adjusting cap screws enough to hold wiper plate for next adjustment.

Wiper Plate-to-Billhook Tongue Groove Clearance -Distance (Approximate) 7.9 mm (5/16 in.)

3. Rotate knotter assembly down slightly while pulling across billhook.

To move wiper plate (A) across jaw of billhook (B), pull applied should be within specification.

Specification

Wiper Plate -Force 22-67 N (5-15 lb force)

4. Tighten cap screws (C) to specification.

Specification

Adjusting Cap Screws -Torque 8-12 N·m (71-106 lb-in.)

IMPORTANT: Hold arm close to billhook and adjust as close as possible without touching.

5. Raise knotter to rotate billhook 180 degrees and move tongue by hand, up and down, to check clearance at closest point between tongue and plate. As billhook passes wiper arm, clearance (B) between tongue (A) and wiper plate must be as specified.

Specification

Billhook Tongue-to-Wiper Plate -Clearance 2.4 mm (3/32 in.)

NOTE: Adjust knife arm to wipe past billhook as far as possible.

6. Adjust wiper arm by adding washers (C) to increase clearance. Remove or replace existing washer with a thin washer to decrease clearance.

7. Install as many shims (A) as possible, and one 21/32 x 15/16 x 0.036 in. washer (B) on shaft of knife arm to remove end play. Fasten with 1/8 x 1 in. cotter pin (C).

8. As billhook is revolved through its 360 degree cycle, lower surface of billhook (A) must clear knife (wiper) arm (B) as specified.

9. Check wiper arm for well rounded and smooth surfaces at ALL portions that contact twine or knots (particularly in throat area (A) and hole (B) to prevent twine fracture.) Remove all rough edges with fine emery cloth.

10. Recheck wiping force by rotating knotter assembly down slightly while pulling across billhook. To move wiper plate (A) across jaw of billhook (B), pull applied should be within specification.
