Adjusting Tucker Fingers

NOTE: Incorrect tucker finger adjustment is a major source of tying difficulties.

To observe knotter operation, remove hay from bale case, trip measuring arm, and turn flywheel by hand until tying cycle is completed.

If incorrect, the knot will appear as illustrated. This is due to the tucker fingers not picking up the needle twine and moving it into the tying position correctly.

With needles (A) in proper adjustment, proceed as follows:

1. Remove two cap screws from knotter bracket (B) and lift knotter assemblies up and out of the path of the needles.

2. Trip bale measuring arm and turn flywheel (by hand) until tucker fingers (C) are closest to the needles.

IMPORTANT: End of each tucker finger must be held upward and to the left with hand pressure while setting clearance.

3. Loosen tucker finger mounting cap screws (D). Move tucker fingers back and forth in the mounting slots until clearance (E), between tucker fingers and needles, is within specification.

Specification

Fingers-to-Needles -Clearance 0.8 mm (1/32 in.)

4. Tighten tucker finger mounting bolts to specification.

Specification

Mounting Cap Screws -Torque 47 N·m (35 lb-ft)

6. Tip of tucker fingers must be set to the left of needle slot within distance (A) while tip of finger is held to the left.

Specification

Tucker Finger Tip-to-Needle Slot -Distance (A) 3 mm (1/8 in.)

7. Adjust pull rods (B) to obtain proper clearance.

8. Fasten knotter bracket using two round-head bolts removed in Step 1.
