INTELLIGUARD™ Metal Detector

Symptom Problem Solution

Metal detector will reset but trips when feed rolls are shifted to forward.

Loose components in feed roll.

Reset metal detector. Leave feed rolls in neutral. Shut tractor engine OFF. Leave key switch ON. Tap on roll with rubber mallet. If unit trips, check for loose components.

Reset metal detector. Disconnect front feed roll drive chains. Rotate feed rolls by hand to determine if upper or lower roll is causing metal detector to trip. Connect feed roll drives one at a time. Run unit with one feed roll turning. Determine if problem is in the upper or lower roll.

Check for loose hardware and broken welds mounting sensor to lower front feed roll shaft.

Feed roll contacting side sheet.

Locate contact and center rolls. (See your John Deere dealer.)

Check for loose locking collar at left-hand side of lower front feed roll.

Loose or damaged wiring harness at lower feed roll shaft.

Repair wiring harness. (See your John Deere dealer.)

Incorrect hardware in lower feed roll.

Replace with stainless steel hardware.

Front feed rolls magnetized by impact.

Check by running a compass along the roll. If roll deflects compass, it will have to be degaussed (demagnetized) or replaced. (See your John Deere dealer.)

Top feed roll shafts magnetized due to feed roll bearing failure.

Check by running a compass along the shaft. If shaft deflects compass, it will have to be degaussed (demagnetized) or replaced. (See your John Deere dealer.)

Symptom Problem Solution

Metal detector out of calibration.

Recalibrate metal detector.

Feedroll damaged.

Repair or replaces feedrolls and recalibrate metal detector.

Failed Bearings.

Replace and recalibrate metal detector.

Pawls set incorrectly.

Reset.

Recalibrate metal detector.

Front feed roll are magnetized.

Check with a small magnet. If magnetized, replace roll. (See your John Deere dealer.)

Incorrect weld added on either front feed roll.

Check with small magnet. If magnetized, replace roll. (See your John Deere dealer.) Any weld repair must be done with a special rod. Use only type 310 stainless steel electrode. Using an incorrect rod will cause roll to trip sensor.

Binding locking pawls will keep solenoid from retracting completely causing solenoid to draw too much current.

Free and adjust pawls. Lubricate. (See ADJUSTING UPPER STOP PAWL and ADJUSTING LOWER STOP PAWN in Service section.)

False trips during field operation under heavy loading.

Upper feed rolls contact roller housing sides when rolls are fully raised.

Center rolls. (See your John Deere dealer.)

Check for loose radius leveling system.

Failed bearing.

Replace bearing.

Slip clutch can sound like false tripping of metal detector.

Make sure LEDs lights control console light when alarm sounds. If the alarm sounds and the LEDs on the control console do not come on then it is the slip clutch alarm and not the metal detector.

Symptom Problem Solution

False trips occur over rough ground.

Loose or dirty wiring connections.

Check connections. Clean and tighten.

Loose hardware.

Check and tighten.

Upper feed rolls contact roller housing sides.

Center rolls. (See your John Deere dealer.)

Check for loose radius leveling system.

Recalibrate.

Reduce sensitivity using metal detector sensitivity dial.

Numerous trips without finding metal.

Detected metal is too small to be found.

A small piece of wire can trip detector. This type of metal is frequently hard to find.

Objects containing iron lodged in or wrapped around one of the feed rolls.

Remove any foreign metal lodged in the feed rolls.

The stopping pawls are incorrectly adjusted.

Adjust pawls. (See ADJUSTING UPPER STOP PAWN and ADJUSTING LOWER STOP PAWL in Service section.)

Upper or lower front feed roll assembly damaged or bearings are worn.

Repair or replace as necessary and recalibrate metal detector. (See your John Deere dealer.)

System trips immediately after resetting.

Solenoid plunger cannot retract completely due to binding pawls. (Bottom light on relay module is "On.")

Free and adjust pawls. Lubricate. (See ADJUSTING UPPER STOP PAWL and ADJUSTING LOWER STOP PAWL in Service section.)

False trips in rough field conditions.

Recalibrate metal detector. Adjust sensitivity dial to make sensor less sensitive.

Electrical short in electric harness.

Repair and replace.
