Gopher mounds and ant hills can cause problems.
The machine can become clogged if there are so many mounds that the machine cannot get one mound cleaned out before hitting another. A single moist mound may also clog the machine. To avoid the problem, raise the cutterbar by lowering the gauge shoes or use a flat guard angle.
Dirt buildup under the knife pushes the knife upward causing excessive gap between the knife and guards.

This buildup may reduce cutting ability and increase knife and hold-down wear.
Keep the float light and raise the cutterbar to avoid scalping the ground.
Periodically remove knives and clean cutterbar.
