Starting the Engine

CAUTION:

TS220
TS220-UN-15APR13

Prevent asphyxiation. Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death to you or someone else.

If you must operate engine in a building, make sure there is adequate ventilation. Either use an exhaust pipe extension to remove the exhaust fumes or open doors and windows to bring enough outside air into the area.

Also refer to Prevent Machine Runaway in the Safety section.

NOTE: If temperature is below 5° C (40° F), refer to Cold Weather Starting Procedure Using Intake Air Heater System in this Section.

Check fuel gauge to be sure that there is plenty of fuel in the tank.

  2. Place hitch control lever (A) in lower position.

  3. Check alternator indicator light and engine oil pressure indicator light. The indicator lights should glow when key switch is turned to the ON position.

If any light does not function properly, see your John Deere dealer.

Set selective control valve levers (B) to neutral position.

NOTE: All SCV levers are equipped with a lever lock to keep the controls in neutral position.

To activate the SCV proceed as follows:

1 - Pull levers to driver direction

2 – Keeping lever pulled activate the SCV moving lever forward or backward according to desired action.

If equipped, activate 4th SCV as follows:

Pull and hold lever upward (1) and move it forward or backward (2) accordingly to the desired action.

Always engage parking brake and put the gear-shift lever (T) in NEUTRAL position before starting the tractor. Otherwise the tractor may move slightly even with the reverse drive lever in neutral position.

CAUTION: On tractors with 24/12 speed transmission, always engage park brake and put the gear shift lever in neutral position before restarting the tractor. Otherwise the tractor may move slightly even with the reverse drive lever in neutral position.

IMPORTANT: On tractors with 24/12 speed transmission, first move reverse drive lever to neutral position and then to the desired travel direction in order to move the tractor.

NOTE: The engine will not start if PTO clutch lever (A) is in engaged position.

Turn key in key (E) clockwise to end position. Release key as soon as engine starts.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT operate starting motor more than 20 seconds at a time. If engine does not start, turn the key to the ZERO position and wait at least one minute for the starting motor to cool before trying again.

Do not adjust hand throttle lever. Run engine for a few minutes. At temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F), extend warm-up period accordingly.

CAUTION: Never operate the engine in a closed building. Make sure there is plenty of ventilation.
