IMPORTANT: Change engine oil every 500 hours, if John Deere Premium oil is used and diesel fuel has a sulfur content of less than 0.10% (1000 ppm).

Change oil whenever a seasonal change in temperature makes oil of a different viscosity necessary.

NOTE: Change engine oil once a year or every 500 hours, whichever occurs first.

Drain oil with engine shut off, but with engine oil still warm.

  1. Remove oil drain plugs (C) (one right and left side of engine) and drain oil.

  2. Replace engine oil filter (D) while changing oil. Apply a film of oil on the new oil filter gasket and install new engine oil filter. Hand tighten plus 1/2 turn.

  3. Install drain plugs (C) and tighten.

  4. Fill crankcase with fresh oil of proper viscosity at filler neck (B). See Section Fuel, Lubricants, Hydraulic Oil and Coolant.

    ItemMeasurementSpecification
    F5C engine crankcase, engine oilCapacity9.5 Liter (10 U.S. qt.)
NEF engine crankcase, engine oilCapacity12 Liter (12.63 U.S. qt.)

  5. Run engine for a short time and check for leaks at filter base and drain plug.

  6. Wait 15 minutes then recheck oil level.

On F5C engines: The oil should be up the XXX mark on the dipstick (A). If necessary, top up with oil before restarting the engine.

On NEF engines: I = normal oil level, II = restore level as soon as possible, III = restore level before restarting the engine.
