Diagnose Engine Start

Symptom Problem Solution

The starter motor does not operate

Ignition switch or master switch not activating.

Check ignition switch and master switch circuits.

Main circuit breakers open.

Put main circuit breakers in the ON position.

Batteries discharged.

Test the batteries for charge.

Start relay circuit breakers open.

Put circuit breakers in the ON position.

Starter motor wiring circuits open, grounded or shorted.

Check electrical connections to the starter.

Starter solenoid and start relay malfunction.

Check the solenoids for malfunctions. Check wiring and connections for damage.

Starter system wiring circuits open, grounded or shorted.

Check all other wiring and connections.

The starter motor operates but the engine will not start

Cold weather.

See "Cold Weather Starting" in Section 2-2.

Lack of fuel.

Check the fuel level. Add fuel, if necessary. See Section 3-1 for recommended diesel fuel.

Lack of fuel flow.

Check the fuel system.

Restricted air intake.

Check air intake system.

Engine stop solenoid circuit breaker open.

Put circuit breaker in ON position.

Stop solenoid malfunction.

Check the solenoid adjustment.
