-
Raise front doors on platform to access cutterbar U-joint coupler.
-
Put a wood block between right-hand end disk and outer sidesheet
to prevent the disk from turning.
-
CAUTION: Knives have two cutting edges. Be careful when working
around the knives. Knives are sharp and can cause serious injury.
Wear gloves when handling knives.

TS268-UN-23AUG88
To avoid serious injury, rotate both knives on all disks,
so they are positioned UNDER the disks.

A - Special Cap Screw and Washer
B - Disk Driver
The special hardened cap screw contains an encapsulated
thread lock compound on it's threads. The special hardened cap screw
must be replaced when removed and installed five times or anytime
the disk driver is replaced.Replace the special hardened
cap screw with genuine John Deere part specified for this application.
Remove special hardened cap screw and special washer (A).

A - U-Joint Coupler
B - Bottom of U-Joint Bosses
C - Driver
D - Bottom of Driver
E - Top of Bearing
It is critical that mating surfaces of the bearing, driver,
yoke, and driver retainer washer be free of dirt and crop before installing
special hardened cap screw. If these areas are not thoroughly cleaned,
the special hardened cap screw can come loose and cause cutterbar
failure.
Clean the following areas before installing U-joint coupler:
-
Bottom (B) of four U-joint bosses
-
Top of disk where U-joint coupler bosses seat
-
Bottom (D) of driver (C)
-
Top (E) of bearing

C - Timing Marks
Align timing marks (C) and install new driver (B) on pinion
shaft.
-
Align timing marks on special washer (A) with mark on driver.
Install washer.
IMPORTANT: To avoid machine damage, use new center cap screw
treated with thread locking compound.
Replace the special
hardened cap screw with genuine John Deere part specified for this
application.
Lubricate cap screw with light oil before installation. Failure
to lubricate could allow cap screw to come loose and cause machine
damage.
-
Lubricate special cap screw (A) with a light oil.
-
Install cap screw and tighten according to specifications.

Disk Driver Cap Screw | Torque | 340 N˙m (250 lb-ft) |
-
IMPORTANT: Each disk must be installed 90° to the adjacent
disk (this is called synchronization). If the disks are not 90°
to each other, damage to machine will result.
NOTE: Disk life can be extended by moving disk to a location
of opposite rotation. If this is done, the knives must be interchanged
for proper cutting direction. (See INSTALLING AND SYNCHRONIZING DISKS
and INSTALLING KNIVES in this section.)

-
Apply NEVER-SEEZ® lubricant to gear case output spline shaft.
-
Insert U-joint coupler through middle of converging drum (B).
Slide splined yoke of U-joint coupler (A) onto splined shaft of gear
case.
-
Move bottom of U-joint coupler and converging drum assembly
into position on disk.
-
IMPORTANT: Disk-to-driver cap screws are treated with thread-locking
compound and can be used up to five times. Replace with the John Deere
cap screw specified for this application.
Fasten disk, converging drum, and U-joint coupler with four
cap screws (C). Tighten cap screws to specifications.
