Steering Linkage

W110 Steering Linkage Adjustment

Check the condition and torque of the steering link pivots and bolts every year or seasonally. Steering linkage components may be found under the cab.

Park the windrower on firm, level ground, shut the engine off, remove the key and perform the following:

  1. Inspect the linkage, components, lines, hoses and moving parts for interference.

If steering rod bolts (A) are loose:

  1. Back off outer jam-nut (C).

  2. Tighten inside nut (D) to 95-108 N·m (70-80 lb.-ft.).

  3. IMPORTANT: If steering rod ball joints (B) are loose, they should be replaced.

    Hold inside nut (D) and tighten jam-nut (C) to 81-95 N·m (60-70 lb.-ft.).

E - Steering Link Ball Joint

Check steering link bolts (A) for looseness and ball joint (B) for excessive play or movement.

If steering rod ball joints (B) are loose, they should be replaced. See your dealer or refer to the Technical Manual for replacement procedure.

If parts have been replaced or adjustments have been made, perform checks for neutral interlock and steering lock.

Neutral Start Switch

The Neutral Start Switch (A) must be closed before the engine can be started.

The switch is closed when the neutral interlock on the pump is activated by positioning the GSL into N-DETENT and locking the steering wheel in CENTER position.

When the switch closes and the machine starts and runs the brakes continue to be applied to the drive wheels as park brake solenoid is energized preventing brake release.

The Neutral Start Switch is located on the frame adjacent to the hydrostatic transmission.

  • Check that electrical connections are good at Neutral Start Switch (A).
  • Check that the plunger of switch is fully compressed when the steering is locked and the GSL is fully in N-DETENT. Adjust switch support if required as follows:
  1. Loosen nut (B) and adjust support (C) as required.

  2. Tighten nut (B).

IMPORTANT: Do NOT over-adjust switch support as this will prevent pintle arms from locking.

W150 Steering Linkage Adjustment

Check the condition and torque of the steering link pivots and bolts every year or seasonally. Steering linkage components may be found under the cab-forward rear area of the windrower, between the caster wheels.

Park the windrower on firm, level ground, shut the engine off, remove the key and perform the following:

  1. Inspect the linkage, components, lines, hoses and moving parts for interference.

  2. Check steering rod bolts (A) for looseness and ball joints (B) for excessive play or movement.

F - Inside Nut

If bolts are loose:

  1. Back off jam-nut (E).

  2. Tighten inside nut (F) to 95-108 N·m (70-80 lb.-ft.)

  3. Hold inside nut (F) and tighten jam-nut (E) to 81-95 N·m (60-70 lb.-ft.).

If steering link ball joints (B) or steering rod ball joints (D) are loose, they should be replaced. See your dealer or refer to the Technical Manual for replacement procedures.

If parts have been replaced or adjustments have been made, perform checks for neutral interlock and steering lock.

Steering Chain Tension

Check steering for binding or excessive play which may be the result of the steering chain being too tight or too loose.

If the chain tension requires adjustment, proceed as follows:

  1. Swivel the operator’s station to position steering column close to the door.

  2. Check dimension at the base of the steering column. Dimension X at spring (A) should be 16 mm (0.625 in.).

Adjust as follows:

  1. Loosen nut (B) and turn nut (C) to achieve 16 mm (0.625 in.) dimension.

  2. Tighten nut (B) against nut (C) to secure position.

  3. Check that steering chain is taut and steering shaft is free to rotate.

Park Brake

The brake is applied when the interlock is fully engaged. To engage the interlock and the brake, the GSL must be in the N-DETENT position and the steering wheel centered.

Interlock Switch Adjustment

The GSL switch is located inside the console but can easily be removed for adjustment or replacement. Check that the GSL contacts the switch lever and plunger.

Adjust switch as follows:

  1. Place GSL in N-DETENT, shut engine off and remove key.

  2. Remove the five screws (A) securing cover on console.

  3. Pull switch support (B) so that rubber retaining nuts (C) pull out of mounting holes and remove switch (D) from console.

  4. Loosen screws (E) and rotate switch on support so that GSL will contact switch lever (F) and push in the plunger.

  5. Tighten screws (E).

  6. Reverse the procedure and replace components.

Interlock Switch Replacement

  1. Follow the previous procedure to step 4.

  2. Disconnect wiring harness at connector.

  3. Cut nylon ties.

  4. Remove screws (E) and remove switch (D).

  5. Install new switch on support with screws.

  6. Secure harness to support with nylon ties.

  7. Connect harness to console wiring.

  8. Install switch support inside console and secure panel cover.
