Replacing Mower Drive Belt (42A)

Remove Mower Drive Belt

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

2. Allow engine and muffler to cool completely.

3. CAUTION: Avoid injury! Rotating blades are dangerous.

   Before adjusting or servicing mower:

   • Disconnect spark plug wire(s) or battery negative (-) cable to prevent engine from starting accidentally.
   • Always wear gloves when handling mower blades or working near blades.
   
   

   Raise mower deck to the transport lock position.

   Remove lock pin, lower handle to its lowest position (A) and install lock pin (B) just above lever to lock deck in lowered position.

5. Remove bolt (C) and foot plate.

   Remove 2 screws (D) and left spindle shield (E) from deck.

7. Remove 3 screws (F) and center shield (G) from deck.

8. CAUTION: Avoid injury! Component is spring-assisted and under tension. Injury can occur if spring-assisted component is released suddenly.

   Install a 3/8 in. ratchet with extension into bottom of square hole (H) in sheave tension arm (I). Rotate counterclockwise to release belt tension and remove belt from left spindle sheave (J).

   Remove hardware (K) and shield (L) under engine drive sheave.

10. Remove deck drive belt from engine sheave.

    Remove two screws (M) and right spindle shield (N).

12. Loosen nut (O) on belt tension pulley and remove belt from pulley (P) and guide.

13. Remove belt from machine.

14. Inspect belt for wear or damage; replace as necessary.

15. Clean top surface of mower deck and sheaves.

Install Mower Drive Belt

   Route belt through center machine shield (A) and install onto engine sheave (B).

   Install belt on three deck sheaves (C) as shown.

3. Tighten bolt (D) on idler sheave to specification.

   Item	Measurement	Specification
   Sheave	Torque	47 N·m (35 lb-ft)

4. CAUTION: Avoid injury! Component is spring-assisted and under tension. Injury can occur if spring-assisted component is released suddenly.

   Install 3/8 inch ratchet with extension into bottom of square hole (E) in sheave tension arm. Rotate arm counterclockwise and install belt on left spindle sheave (F).

   Install center deck shield (G) with 3 screws (H).

6. Install left spindle shield (I) with 2 screws (J).

7. Install right spindle shield (K) with 2 screws (L).

   Install shield (M) under engine drive sheave and secure with 4 bolts (N).

9. Install foot plate and secure with original hardware.
