Symptom Problem Solution

Cylinder Not Getting Full Speed Range

Loose belts.

Adjust belts.

Slugging or Overloading of Cylinder.

Engine not up to correct speed.

See your John Deere dealer.

Variable speed cylinder belt slipping at slow speed.

Adjust sheave gap.

Hydraulic problem.

See your John Deere dealer.

Concave-to-cylinder spacing too close or too wide.

Adjust concave-to-cylinder spacing.

Cylinder speed too slow for crop.

Increase cylinder speed.

Too much material entering cylinder.

Reduce ground speed.

Backfeeding of Cylinder.

Engine not up to correct speed.

See your John Deere dealer.

Separator curtains slowing crop too much.

Remove front curtain.

Beater grate in upper position.

Lower beater grate.

Symptom Problem Solution

Grain Not Threshed

Crop not ready to thresh.

Test moisture of crop before combining.

Cylinder speed too slow.

Increase cylinder speed enough to do a good job of threshing but do not increase speed to the point where grain cracks.

Concave not level.

Level concave. See your John Deere dealer.

Cylinder to concave spacing too wide.

Close cylinder-to-concave spacing until tight bar ticks to increase threshing action.

Unthreshed heads passing through concave.

Install concave cover plates to keep unthreshed heads from passing through grate.

Uneven feeding to cylinder.

Check feeder conveyor chain tension and float in feeder house.

Not enough material entering combine for proper threshing action.

Increase ground speed.

HX,AG,SF7233 -19-15APR98-2/5

Symptom Problem Solution

Too Much Cracked Grain In Tank.

Cylinder speed too fast for crop.

Decrease cylinder speed just enough to stop grain cracking, but still do a good threshing job, and/or open concave slightly.

Cylinder-to-concave spacing too close.

Open cylinder-to-concave spacing just enough to stop cracking.

Too much clean grain in tailings, causing grain to crack when rethreshed.

Open sieve slightly to reduce tailings.

Reduce fan speed.

Not enough straw entering combine.

Increase ground speed.

Dented auger housings or bent auger shafts cracking grain between flights and housings.

Remove dents from auger housings and/or straighten bent auger shafts.

Using wrong type of rasp bars.

See rasp bar information in the Separator section of this manual.

Symptom Problem Solution

Grain Loss Over Straw Walkers.

Damaged or missing straw walker curtain.

Install new curtain.

Straw walker overloaded due to incomplete threshing or late threshing at concave.

Reduce cylinder to concave spacing and/or increase cylinder speed to increase threshing action.

Straw walker openings plugged so threshed grain cannot drop through to walker return pan.

Clean out openings in straw walkers.

Straw walkers overloaded so grain cannot get through material to walker return pan.

Reduce ground speed. Check to be both curtains are in place.

Raise platform to cut less material.

Beater grate in low position.

Move grate to high position.

Material over threshed and pulverized.

Cylinder-to-concave setting too close and/or cylinder speed too fast. Increase spacing.

Straw walker pans not extended.

Extend walker pans.

Almost No Chaff in Tailings. Grain Tank Very Clean.

Fan speed is too high and/or chaffer not open far enough.

Reduce fan speed and/or increase chaffer opening.

Material Lodging On Straw Walker and Not Being Evenly Discharged From Rear of Combine

Material catching on straw walker curtain and building up on front of walkers.

Remove front curtain.

Material not flowing evenly to walkers.

See "SLUGGING OR OVERLOADING OF CYLINDER".

Some Chaff in Tailings. Grain Tank Clean.

Sieve is closed too tight.

Open sieve.

Heavy Chaff in Tailings. Grain Tank MAY Range From Good To Dirty.

Sieve is closed too tight and fan is too slow.

Open sieve and increase fan speed.

Symptom Problem Solution

Too Much Trash (Ground Up Weeds) in Tailings.

Chaffer and extension too far open for weedy conditions.

Close chaffer and extension.

Cylinder too fast or concave too tight.

Reduce cylinder speed and/or open cylinder-to-concave spacing.

Dirty Grain Tank (Unthreshed Heads).

Sieve too far open.

Close sieve.

Pre-cleaner open.

Close pre-cleaner.

Cylinder not threshing enough.

Increase cylinder speed and/or close cylinder-to-concave spacing.

Dirty Grain Tank (Mostly Chaff).

Fan speed too slow.

Increase fan speed.

Pre-cleaner too far open in corn or pre-cleaner not closed in grain crops.

Adjust or close pre-cleaner.

Loss of Grain Over Cleaning Shoe (Grain Tank is Clean).

Chaffer closed.

Open chaffer.

Pre-cleaner closed (corn only).

Open pre-cleaner.

Fan speed incorrect.

Adjust fan speed. Check tailings, losses and grain tank.

High Grain Losses (Occurs At Low Feedrates or High Feedrates).

Fan speed too fast.

Reduce fan speed.

Chaffer not open far enough.

Open chaffer.

Pre-cleaner not open far enough.

Open pre-cleaner.

High Grain Losses (Occurs at High Feedrates Only).

Fan speed too low.

Increase fan speed.

Unloading Auger Will Not Shut Off.

Cylinder rod stop out of adjustment.

Adjust stop.

Cleaning Shoe Sensors Plugging Up with Trash.

Trash is getting caught between plastic fingers and sensor.

Remove fingers over the sensor.
