Cutting Platform

Symptom Problem Solution

Shattering of Grain Ahead of Cutterbar

Reel speed not matched to ground speed, causing crop to be struck before it is cut.

Adjust reel speed to match with ground speed so reel moves crop evenly. Reel should turn slightly faster than ground travel speed.

Reel is positioned too low.

Raise reel.

Ground speed too fast for conditions of crop.

Slow down ground speed so reel will not hit crop, causing shattering.

Cut Crop Building Up and Falling from Front of Cutterbar or Loss of Grain Heads at Cutterbar.

Reel not adjusted low enough for good delivery of cut crop to auger.

Set reel low enough to sweep material from cutterbar. Extend rigid cutterbar.

Not enough ledge for crop travel.

Extend rigid cutterbar.

Auger clearance too high from platform bottom.

Adjust auger to 3 mm (1/8 in.) minimum clearance to bolt heads in floor.

Adjust finger timing.

Cutting too high, straw too short for proper delivery.

Lower platform to cut material long enough for even feeding to auger.

Reel speed too slow.

Increase reel speed.

Mat of Green Material Builds Up on Rigid Cutterbar.

Rigid cutterbar is in mid or fully extended position.

Move rigid cutterbar to rearward position.

Too Much Material Entering Combine.

Cutting too low, trying to get all down and tangled crops.

Use lifting guards or pickup reel in down and tangled conditions.

Too High of Cut.

Cutter Bar to far from ground.

Adjust height control dial.

Material Building Up at End of Cutterbar.

Down crop causes end of knife to cut thicker mat of material.

Install non-clog cutterbar guards at ends of cutterbar.

Symptom Problem Solution

Uneven or Bunched Feeding of Crop to Cylinder.

Auger clearance too high from platform bottom.

Adjust auger to 3 mm (1/8 in.) minimum clearance to bolt heads in floor.

Adjust finger timing.

Reel is positioned too high.

Move reel back and then down.

Build up of grain on cutterbar.

Lower height of reel and set fore-and-aft position as close as possible to cutterbar and auger.

Platform drive belt slipping.

Spring-loaded tightener must be free and tight against belt.

Conveyor chain too slow.

Change to large sprocket on right-hand side of lower feeder house drive shaft.

Auger too far ahead of stripper.

Adjust auger back to stripper.

Feeder drum lower stops set too high.

Adjust lower stops. ( See combine Operator's Manual.) Remove optional feeder house closure strips.

Auger flight opening is too wide for feeder house opening.

Install auger flight extensions.

Auger Wrapping in Tangled and Weedy Crops.

Auger not very good in delivering crop to feeder house.

Remove paint and rust from auger in area of fingers.

Move auger back closer to fixed stripper support.

Adjust stripper closer to auger.

Add floor strippers.

Remove all auger fingers and install flight extensions.

Symptom Problem Solution

Poor Feeding to Auger.

Rigid cutterbar is too far forward.

Move rigid cutterbar rearward.

Paint and rust on platform floor in back of cutterbar.

Remove paint and rust from platform floor in back of cutterbar.

Pickup fingers are pitched too much.

Reduce pitch of fingers.

NOTE: In many instances, incorrect adjustments on platform, not ACTIVE HEADER CONTROL (AHC) ™ , can cause poor cutting action. Make adjustments to ACTIVE HEADER CONTROL (AHC) ™ only after platform has been adjusted.

Ragged and Uneven Cutting of Crop.

Feeder house lower shaft not at recommended speed.

Check basic speed of combine. ( See combine Operator's Manual.)

Cutterbar plugged with material.

Adjust reel to sweep material off cutterbar.

Check platform and feeder house drives. ( See combine Operator's Manual.)

Various parts of cutterbar are worn, damaged or broken.

Check and replace all worn and broken parts.

Bent knife, causing binding of cutting parts.

Straighten knife. Check guard alignment and align if necessary for a smooth cut.

Knife clips not adjusted to let knife work freely.

Adjust clips so knife will work freely, but still keep knife sections from lifting off guards.

Cutting edge of guards not close enough or parallel to knife sections.

Adjust guards.

Symptom Problem Solution

Loose between knife back and guards.

Adjust wearing plates so knife back is snug to guard.

Lips of guards out of adjustment or bent, causing poor shearing action.

Adjust lips of guards so they are parallel to shear edge of guards.

Too Much Vibration of Cutting Parts.

Feeder house lower shaft not at recommended speed.

Check basic speed of combine. ( See combine Operator's Manual.)

Cutting parts and knife drive too loose.

Check feeder house lower shaft speed. ( See combine Operator's Manual.)

Remove extra play from cutterbar and knife drive to eliminate vibration. Cutterbar and knife drive must be adjusted.

Variable Speed feeder house is too fast.

Slow variable speed feeder house.

Flex Platform Cutting Crop Too High.

Left-hand end of cutterbar is tipped back.

Adjust stabilizer spring.

Too light of pressure on skid plates.

Move ACTIVE HEADER CONTROL (AHC) ™ height control dial to lower header.

Reel Wrapping Tangled and Weedy Crops.

Slat reel not delivering crop very good.

Install pickup reel.

Incorrect location of reel.

Place reel well ahead and down. If wrapping occurs at end of reel, install reel end shields.

Reel speed too fast.

Slow reel speed to let crop flow into platform.

ACTIVE HEADER CONTROL (AHC) is a trademark of Deere & Company.

Symptom Problem Solution

Reel Carrying Around Straw.

Reel speed too fast.

Slow reel speed so straw will not carry over top of reel. Reel should turn slightly faster than ground speed.

Reel height too low.

Raise reel to reduce amount of straw gathered by reel.

Pickup fingers pitched too much.

Reduce finger pitch.

Green Material Will Not Feed from Rigid Cutterbar to Auger.

Rigid cutterbar is in mid or fully extended position.

Move rigid cutterbar to rearward position.

Reel is positioned too high.

Lower reel or reposition reel lift cylinders.

Pickup fingers are pitched too much.

Reduce finger pitch.
