Proper reel speed depends on various factors:
-
Tall crops (e.g. rye)
-
Short crops (e.g. barley)
-
Crop density
-
Are crops down or standing?
Basically, reel speed should be adjusted as follows:
IMPORTANT:
If reel speed is too fast, grain loss can occur.
NOTE:
To adjust finger pitch setting, see Reel Adjustments section.

Set reel so slats strike just below lowest grain heads and just ahead of knife. In crops that are down and badly tangled, reel must be set to just clear knife and auger to sweep material back to auger.
In short, damp or weedy grain crops, move reel back and down. Reel fingers must clear divider points and be adjusted vertical to cutterbar. Keep speed as fast as possible without shattering grain or carrying straw around over top of reel. Slow ground travel speed usually requires slow reel speed.
