Starting the Engine

causym CAUTION: Before starting engine, make sure everyone is clear of combine. Sound horn to warn other persons.

Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death. If it is necessary to run an engine in an enclosed area, remove the exhaust fumes from the area with an exhaust pipe extension.

If you do not have an exhaust pipe extension, open the doors and get outside air into the area.

If combine can be started with any of these switches (A, C, D ) engaged, the starting system needs diagnosing. See your John Deere dealer.

1. Move multifunction control handle (A) to neutral.

2. Place orange engine speed control switch (B) in slow idle position.

3. Disengage header switch (C) and separator switch (D).

causym CAUTION: Sound horn before starting engine to clear people away from combine.

To avoid the possibility of personal injury or death, start the engine ONLY from the operator seat. Do not start engine by shorting across starter terminals. Combine will start in gear if normal circuit is bypassed.

NOTE: When key switch is turned to the "START" position, there is a delay of a couple of seconds before the engine starts. This allows controllers to power up, relays to close and the starter solenoid to energize.

Decal (A) on the storage box lid shows engine starting information.

4. Sound horn and turn key switch (B) located on the right-side of the steering column to the "ACCESSORIES" position. A buzzer will sound once due to low oil pressure.

Key positions are:

Key Positions
First Position OFF
Second Position Accessories
Third Position Accessories and Run
Fourth Position Start

5. Turn key switch to "RUN" position. Engine hydrostatic charge pressure (A), main gear case pressure (B), engine oil pressure (C) and parking brake (D) indicator lights will come ON, if the parking brake has been applied a buzzer will sound one short pulse. If amber voltage light (E) comes ON, this shows that the battery voltage is low and the combine may not start.

IMPORTANT: To prevent starter damage, do not operate starter for more than 30 seconds at a time. If engine does not start, wait at least two minutes before trying again.

6. Turn key switch clockwise to start. All lights on the overhead warning display panel will come ON. Release key switch when engine starts.

If temperature is below -5°C (23°F) it may be necessary to use ether aid (see Ether Aid in Operating the Engine section). After the engine starts, let the engine run at low idle for five minutes to warm oil. After the engine starts, all warning lights except the parking brake must be OFF. If any other warning lights stay ON, stop the engine and correct.

NOTE: Voltage light (A) will momentarily come ON if the batteries are in a low charged state and will stay ON if the electrical system voltage drops below 10 volts. If Stop Engine Code (1) is displayed - The Triple Display tachometer will stop normal function and the DTC will be displayed. This indicates a problem that requires the combine be stopped, the engine turned OFF immediately and the problem corrected. The display will show the DTC until the problem is resolved. If the problem cannot be resolved, see your John Deere dealer.

7. For turbocharger lubrication, run engine at low idle for a few minutes before applying a load to the engine.
