Starting the Engine

causym CAUTION: Before starting engine, make sure everyone is clear. Sound horn to clear people away from combine.

Engine exhaust fumes can cause sickness or death. If it is necessary to run an engine in an enclosed area, remove the exhaust fumes from the area with an exhaust pipe extension.

If you do not have an exhaust pipe extension, open the doors and get outside air into the area.

If combine can be started with any of these switches engaged (B, C, D, E), the starting system needs diagnosing. See your John Deere dealer.

1. Make sure that battery main switch (A) is in the ON position.

2. Move multifunction control handle (B) to neutral.

3. Place engine speed control switch (C) in low idle position.

4. Disengage header switch (D) and separator switch (E).

causym CAUTION: Sound horn before starting engine to clear people away from combine.

To avoid the possibility of personal injury or death, start the engine ONLY from the operator seat. Do not start engine by shorting across starter terminals. Combine will start in gear if normal circuit is bypassed.

5. Turn key switch to "Accessories and Run" position. Engine hydrostatic charge pressure, main gear case pressure, engine oil pressure and parking brake indicator lights will come ON (if parking brake was applied a buzzer will sound one short pulse). If amber voltage light (A) comes ON, this indicates that the battery voltage is low and the machine may not start.

IMPORTANT: To prevent starting motor damage, do not operate starting motor for more than 30 seconds. If engine does not start, wait at least two minutes before trying again.

NOTE: When key switch is turned to "Start" position, a delay of a couple of seconds will occur before the engine starts. This allows controllers to power up, relays to close and starter solenoid to energize.

6. Turn key switch clockwise to start. All warning lights on overhead warning display panel will come ON. Release key switch when engine starts.

After engine starts, all warning lights except the parking brake must go out. If any other warning lights stay ON, stop the engine and correct.

NOTE: If Stop Engine Code (1) is displayed - The triple display tachometer will stop normal function and the Diagnostic Trouble Code will be displayed. This indicates a problem that requires the machine be stopped, the engine turned OFF immediately and the problem corrected. The display will show the code until the problem is resolved. If the problem cannot be resolved, see your John Deere dealer.

7. For turbocharger lubrication, run engine at low idle for a few minutes before applying a load to the engine.
