Cooling System-Filling
CAUTION:
Avoid being scalded when radiator cap is removed. Turn cap slightly to the radiator stop. This lets steam safely out the vent. Never fill radiator when engine is overheated unless engine is idling slowly. Pour coolant in slowly. Check coolant level when engine is cold.
IMPORTANT:
A special radiator cap is used on 6.8 L engines. If radiator cap is damaged or is missing, it must be replaced by an equivalent radiator cap.
Fill radiator until no more fluid can be added and fluid begins to run into the surge tank or recovery tank. (Refer to Specifications section for Radiator Capacities).
Finish filling radiator until fluid is at "Full Cold" mark on surge tank or recovery tank.
Install cap on radiator, turn ON heater and run engine until it reaches operating temperature.
Remove cap from surge tank or recovery tank and refill as necessary. Do not fill surge tank or recovery tank from radiator. Install cap on surge tank or recovery tank.
When engine is cool, coolant level should be up to "COLD" mark.
IMPORTANT:
Never pour cold water into a hot engine as it might crack cylinder block or head. Do not operate engine without coolant.
