Glow Plugs (Cold Weather Starting Aid)

CAUTION: Do not use ether or starting fluids to start engines with glow plugs. Ether is highly flammable and could ignite on engines with glow plugs. Engine damage could result.

If fuel temperature is below 0°C (32°F) it will be necessary to allow glow plugs to heat before starting. Glow plug times will vary depending on fuel temperature (colder temperatures require glow plugs to heat longer).

Turn key to “RUN” position. CommandCenter display will show “Engine Preheat Timer” (A) indicating glow plugs are ON and will countdown (B) a time to when engine can be started. Once activated, plugs remain ON for a minimum period of five seconds and a maximum of 30 seconds depending on temperature. Glow plugs will stay ON an additional five seconds after timer goes to zero. Glow plugs will stay ON for ten seconds (depending on fuel temperature) after engine starts.

If start attempt fails, turn key OFF for 15 seconds to allow Engine Control Unit (ECU) controller to reset. If “Engine Preheat Timer” does not appear on CommandCenter display, controller wasn’t rest long enough. If started repeatedly with glow plug activation and machine is run for a short period of time, battery power may become weak, (see Connecting Booster Batteries in Service the Electrical section).

When engine starts, let engine run at low idle for five minutes to warm oil.
