Primary Fuel/Water Separator and Secondary Fuel Filter—Replacing

CAUTION:

TS1343
TS1343-UN-18MAR92

High-pressure fluid remaining in fuel lines can cause serious injury. Only technicians familiar with this type of system should perform repairs. Before disconnecting fuel lines, sensors, or any other components between the high-pressure fuel pump and nozzles on engines with High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel system, wait a minimum of 15 minutes after engine is stopped.

NOTE: Change primary fuel/water separator filter and secondary fuel filters if performance decline is noticed or if ECU 94.17 and 1347.07 appear. Reset code after replacing filters.

  1. Start engine and run 3 to 5 minutes at low idle if machine had not been previously operating.

  2. Shut OFF engine.

  3. Close fuel shut off at bottom of fuel tank.

  4. Thoroughly clean exterior of filter elements and filter mounting areas.

  5. CAUTION: Filters may be under pressure. Do not remove filters without completing the following steps.

NOTE: Use a catch pan when draining fuel and when removing fuel filters.

    A - Primary Fuel/Water Separator Filter

    B - Drain

    C - Secondary Fuel Filter

    D - Drain

Drain fuel contaminates and relieve pressure from primary fuel/water separator filter (A) by opening drain (B).

  6. Drain fuel contaminates and relieve pressure from secondary fuel filter (C) by opening drain (D).

  7. NOTE: Additional fuel will drain from filter housings.

Close drain valves and remove fuel filters.

  8. IMPORTANT: Do NOT prefill either fuel filter with fuel.

NOTE: Lube filter seals with diesel fuel before installing.

    A - Primary Fuel/Water Separator Filter

    B - Secondary Fuel Filter

Install replacement primary fuel/water separator filter (A) and secondary fuel filter (B). Tighten 3/4 turn after seal contacts filter housing.

  9. Open fuel shut off at bottom of fuel tank to allow primary fuel/water separator filter to fill.

  10. Turn key switch ON for 60 seconds to allow fuel pump to prime fuel system.

  11. Start engine and run 3 to 5 minutes at low idle.
